5 out of 5 starsLove it love it. Looks exactly as pictured, and makes the nicest clinking sound when you give it a shake. It'll be perfect for my green and gold dragon dice. If I had to nitpick I'd probably prefer a different yarn color, something more complimentary, but it's really a non-issue to me. Very happy with it, and a killer price too!

5 out of 5 starsI absolutely love the scale gauntlets I purchased! They're warm, well-constructed, and the patterning on them is beautiful ( I chose the Phoenix design). I have big hands, but I ordered the larger size and they fit me perfectly. Very pleased with these and would order again!!

I love making costume pieces!
If necessity is the mother of invention, then imagination is the father.
Almost a decade ago I bought a bunch of metal scales intending to make armor. But I hated the tedium of linking each ring. The frugal part of me couldn't waste the scales so after much thought and experimentation Dragonhide knitted armor was born.
My etsy shop was just a little hobby before I introduced my technique. But oh, how it's taken off. Now it is a full time job. I knit scale armor several hours a day. When I'm not knitting I'm sewing from patterns I drafted. I've recently branched into making steampunk bustles, from Victorian historically accurate to strictly ornamental. When I'm not doing that I'm hitting estate sales searching out quality and vintage fabrics to use. (Latest find-vintage textiles from the estate sale of the former textile curator of the MOMA!) In the little time left over I am a silversmith.
My designs often start with the fabric. I saved the rich red upholstery velvet in the bustle photo above for a couple of years before a project worthy of its splendor came along.
We are working on spinning off most of the Dragonhide to a second shop, Dragonhidebiz here on etsy. For a while some designs will be available on both shops.

Frequently asked questions
How did you learn how to knit scalemail?
Knitted scalemail is my own invntion. Almost 10 years ago I bought a bunch of scales to make a traditional armor shirt for my husband. About one inch into it I realized that wasn't going to happen. But I had all those scales and I hate waste, so I fooled around with it until I came up with my technique.
Care instructions
Dragonhide knitted scalemail is hand washable, lay flat to dry. If your item has leather laces or plastic inserts, remove them before washing.
Non Dragonhide items will have care instructions in the listing. (I'm adding these now, it might take a while to get them all.)
What is your custom order completion time?
This varies widely by the size of the project. Small custom dice bags can be ready in just a few days, whereas large projects can take weeks. Please contact me for a completion time for your project.
Do you guarantee your work?
I fully guarantee your satisfaction. If you aren't thrilled with your purchase please contact me within seven days of receipt to arrange a refund or exchange.
My work also is warranteed to be without defect and to last. Defects in my work are my problem and I will correct them.
How long will my international order take to arrive?
I'm afraid there is no easy answer for this one. Shipments to Canada usually take less than 2 weeks. Overseas varies between about 1 week up to 6. Occasionally an item gets held in customs, which can delay things further. For many destinations limited tracking is available, your tracking number will be in the email you receive when I ship your order.
Customers in the UK-if your order has not arrived it might be at your local post office. UK customers have informed me that you are supposed to get a card from your postal carrier if custom fees are due, however that card sometimes is not delivered.
Will I have to pay custom/VAT on my order?
I am shipping from Washington state in the US. If you are overseas, the answer is "Maybe." Each country has its own limit before customs apply. Please check your governments website for more information. I do know the UK has a very low threshhold, and in addition to VAT the postal service will collect a handling fee of 8 pounds. Sometimes more expensive items slip through unnoticed, but please be prepared for VAT/customs/handling fee.
