Announcement   THE ULTIMATE MINI GUIDE TO CONTEMPORARY CURIOSITY CABINETS
Precursors to museums, curiosity cabinets were rooms for mystery and science with an alluring touch of magic leaning towards the rare, eclectic and esoteric. The earliest pictorial record of these cabinets of wonders date back to the 16th century and meant the creation of wide-ranging galleries where the best and weirdest of natural history, artifacts and antique objects blended on the shelves.

When it comes to modern curiosity cabinets it’s all about displaying your collection of quirky and truly curious items in the context of the space. YOUR space. So don’t fret if you don’t have years of collecting endeavors, feathers, mineral specimens and animal bones. The pieces you have chosen and the way in which you display them will create a mood that invites the visitor to linger for hours noticing every detail and learning about each little treasure of your collection.

There is no wrong way to create your cabinets but keep in mind that all the objects should harmonize with one another regardless of how different they are.

THE WHAT, THE WHO, THE WHEN, THE WHY, THE WHERE.

THE WHAT
A solid foundation from which to create your very own curiosity cabinet is displaying things that pull at your heartstrings and remind you of fond memories. Choosing meaningful and appealing items -at least to you- is the right way to start.
You can group pieces together to form mini collections and arrange them in eye-catching ways that speak to more than just the objects themselves.
Hint: To highlight the beauty and uniqueness of their pieces, old-world collectors usually put their items into apothecary jars, under bell jars or in framed shadow boxes. While a handful of seashells may disappear in the decor, under a glass dome “Botanical Art Seashells” small terrarium magically becomes something else. Ta-daaa!

THE WHO
Fascinated with the natural world from an aesthetic and philosophical point of view? Struck with Artificialia, Naturalia, Exotica and Scientifica? In love with rooms with a scent of Victorian intrigue and a moody romantic ambience? All of you, unconventional, curious, quirky travelers, explorers, scientists and collectors should immediately create your very own mini museum in your cabinet of wonders!
Hint: Lovers of dark decor infatuated with human appendages will surely find attractive
ornamented small pieces like this decorative victorian “Red Right Hand” frame in the link below

THE WHEN
Right Now, don’t hesitate. The premise is to capture the wonder of objects -natural, collected, found and gifted- and give them a room in which to shine.
Hint: Specimens to display in your cabinets don’t exclusively need to come from nature. Elements with remarkable qualities created or modified by human -like human organ replicas with an artistic twist- are truly curious and deserve to be exhibited in your microcosm of wonders.
In the sample below, “Cupid Was Here” decorative heart in a bell jar combines the taste for anatomy and mythology that was so popular among collectors in the Victorian era.

THE WHY
Diving into Cabinets of Curiosities takes you away from the everyday mundane with fascinating things that evoke moments of interest. These decorative spaces have an ever-changing mood that evolves with new additions and edits and it’s not something anyone can replicate because the foundation is all you.
Hint: Elements under cloches, framed decorative pieces and even alluring vintage notecards can become a curiosity cabinet showpiece. “Death in a Pancake Tutu” shown in the sample below will bring an unusual artistic touch of anatomy to your vignette.

THE WHERE
Any room in which the collections have a story to tell. You can collect anything from anywhere but the pieces should work in the room and with each other. It’s important to have a plan and let your personality shine through. The fun comes from blending past and present, natural and artificial in an unexpected way
Hint: For those who want to embrace the art of curiosity collecting, remember that arrangements don’t necessarily need to be displayed in a cabinet. A shelf, a shadowbox or tabletop can perfectly set the stage for a wonderful assortment of unusual treasures like the small miniature garden “Life Less Dead” glass cloche that you will find checking the link below:

About

Artificialia Room

Purveyors of unconventional small gifts that will appeal you: oddities in bell jars, curiosities in frames, unique Victorian stationery and vintage apothecary labels.

Hi, these are Carmen & Martens, the creative minds behind Artificialia Room. From our studio in Madrid, we proudly make and sell our unusual exquisiteness in our digital flagship on Etsy, where we found the perfect way to reach other beautiful, unique and twisted souls … like yours!

Our fondness for the strange and unusual and an innate inclination to explore creative fields led us to design our very own art pieces that hopefully will inspire you to revisit the charming concept of Cabinet of Wonders. Skulls, butterflies, shells, anatomical pieces, mushrooms, unicorns, pharmaceutical labels are some of the many unexpected curiosities that you will find in our little shoppe.

We hope that our catalogue of little wonders will help you to find that small alternative gift to treat yourself or your beloved ones and be sure that the bell jars that protect and embellish the small pieces will arrive safe and sound. They are blown borosilicate glass domes, so the final result is not only a clear and crisp piece but also a solid display that will shine in your shrine!

We celebrate the art of collecting unusual items, the genius behind Rod Serling’s scripts and Roald Dahl’s stories, the thrill of traveling with cultural and culinary purposes, the smell of clean white linen and being happy for having achieved what our never ending source of inspiration Diana Vreeland once said: There’s only one very good life and that’s the life you know you want and you make it yourself.

Big hugs from Madrid,
Carmen & Martens xxX

Frequently asked questions

The HEIGHT of our Oddities in Glass Domes is 2.75 inches / 7 cm and the BASE DIAMETER is 1.73 inches / 4,4 cm

All our domes are blown -not tooled- borosilicate glass, which means each piece is shaped by eye, eliminating lines and imperfections common with tooled pieces. The final result is a solid clear and crisp piece that you can gently wash with a mild soap solution.

Pieces inside the domes ARE NOT washable. The original color of the items and materials used in the sceneries could be damaged in the cleaning process.

Upon finished, every Artificialia Room piece is placed inside one of our Antique Collage Novelties Artificialia Room packages, sealed with lace and wax. Please check the pictures in the product's gallery to see the details.

Oh and as a way to say thank YOU for your purchase, we always include a handmade miniature card and envelope!

Sorry, we don't wholesale. When margins are tight and production time high, it's tough to figure out a good wholesale strategy that benefits both the retailer and the maker.

Our little bell jars are borosilicate glass blown, not tooled. This means they are solid enough to arrive safe and sound to anywhere in the world. But unfortunately accidents may happen.

In case your order was damaged during the transportation -fragile is just a word in postal services- please contact us and we will find a solution.

We don't want customers with broken items and broken hearts.

All our items are shipped from Madrid, Spain as certified with insurance that covers lost packages.

Please keep in mind that unfortunately shipping estimates are not delivery estimates. These may vary depending on climatology or if your package was randomly held in customs for inspections.

In case of delay don't hesitate to contact us and we'll do our best to assist you.

Shipping Expenses are FREE for our customers but unfortunately we cannot re-send packages for FREE.

If for some reason your package is sent back to our studio (recipient was not home, you provided a wrong address, etc) and want us to re-send it you will have to cover the shipping expenses.
