About

David's Portraits

My practice is very direct. I create portraits of literary figures, musicians, artists, activists, and other personalities whose accomplishments have inspired or contributed to my own life and work. I collect photos from common sources such as Internet search engines, magazines, or book jackets. Using the photos as a reference, I begin each individual piece with an immediate gesture drawing that simplifies the face into shapes, allowing the ink to determine the features.

This series began in 2007 shortly after graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. The thirty piece series that was on display at The Wired Monk Cafe, in Halifax, all sold to independent buyers. This initial success propelled me to continue producing portraits in a similar fashion.

I have since lived and worked in Halifax, Montreal and Peterborough, and have been active in my local art communities, consistently exhibiting work at art galleries, craft fairs and other venues. I also donate my artworks to a several charitable organizations.

In 2012 I relocated back to Nova Scotia, and bought an old farm house in rural Nova Scotia. I continue to create art and have printed a small series of coffee mugs with my portraits.

Thanks for discovering my Etsy shop. My art is a celebration of all those interesting people that have inspired us throughout our lives. I've also recently included some mixed media paintings on canvas or panel completed at various times throughout my artistic career.

Payment
I accept Paypal, Credit Card, money orders, cheques, and Etsy Gift Cards. Items will be shipped out once payment is received. If paying through cheque or money order, expect a longer shipping time due to payment method.
Shipping
I live rurally in Nova Scotia, Canada, and don't have easy access to a Post Office. I will do my best to ship out items the next day following payment, but no later than the second day. If this is an inconvenience, or if you desire faster shipping, please contact me so we can make necessary arrangements.

If paying through cheque, or money order, items will be shipped out once payment is received in the mail and the payment clears on my end.

PORTRAITS: My portraits will be safely enclosed in a sealed plastic cello envelope and stored between two flat pieces of board, all packed within a stiff cardboard mailer.

MIXED MEDIA: My mixed media pieces will be wrapped in parchment paper and bubble wrap, secured in packaging made from recycled cardboard boxes. Works on canvas will also be wrapped securely in bubble wrap, and then enclosed in recycled cardboard packaging. The large scale works on canvas may need additional preparation time prior to shipment due to their size.

SHIPPING TIMES:
Canada: approx. 2-6 business days
United States: approx. 6-10 business days

If a package is held up in customs, it may take up to 8 weeks to be delivered (as this is beyond my control). Also if there are any duties, customs fees and applicable taxes that may be incurred they are the responsibility of the customer.

I ship through Canada Post, and list the most economical method of shipping, therefore most shipments do not have a tracking number. If you would prefer to have it sent Express and/or as Registered Mail and are willing to incur the costs, contact me to set up a custom order with your specific shipping requirements.
