Radicalize Your Life with Color!

I have been working on DawgArt since 2001. Back then I was a self-taught artist living in Gilbert, Arizona. I take the colorful inspiration for my paintings from the desert Southwest, human and animal relationships, and life in general. Now I have my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Utah Valley University. I create designs and paintings in my art studio.

I opened my shop in March of 2011, and over the years, sold thousands of prints and paintings all over the world. In March of 2021, after my sales fell 90% over the course of 2020, I closed my shop following the permanent closure of the local print shop I’ve used for the last twenty years. All of this was due to the effects of the COVID pandemic. I hope to resurrect this shop with a new inventory, original stickers designed for people who love rainbows, activism, and animals. I work with various rescue and shelter groups by donating artwork to fundraising auctions and high-resolution files to orgs to promote awareness and direct care for animals in need. I live in Mesa, AZ with my spouse, our four kids, and our rescues, Juniper and Thea.

Artist's Statement: "One of my professors, as we were packing up to leave class, would say to us, 'Use your powers for good!'. Art has power. I am fascinated by the healing power of art and I explore that with my work. When I put brush to canvas, I have two goals. The first is to communicate the soul of one creature to another on the two-dimensional canvas. It isn't easy! My second goal is to make people smile."

I take commissions for custom artwork! Visit www.DawgArt.com to find out more.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: I used to see prints and artwork in your shop. What happened?

COVID happened. My traditional prints are now being transferred to Fine Art America. Find the link at dawgart.com. Hope you find some stickers you like!

Question: Are your paintings made on a computer?

I started out exclusively working in paint on canvas. I got an iPad in 2020, and started to use the software Procreate. So now I work in digital paint too!

Question: Where did you learn how to paint like this?

As far as DawgArt goes, I am self-taught. I started creating DawgArt as a fluke in 2001. My next-door neighbor asked me to make a painting of her dog that matched her house. Her house was painted in every color of the rainbow! Since I was self-taught, I didn't really know what I was doing, so I just tried to swallow my uncertainty and paint. Each painting is created through an intuitive process. I put the sketched out canvas on my easel, squeeze color onto the canvas and just start painting with colors I feel good about. Since I do very little planning for each piece, aside from blocking out time, every painting is an experiment! I was accepted into the Illustration BFA program at Utah Valley University in spring of 2011. But my process for creating DawgArt didn’t change. Even when I work digitally for a pet portrait, I still start with a blank canvas and a sketch, and put the paint on in layers. The only difference is that I’m working on a tablet with a stylus instead of a canvas with a paintbrush.

Question: Why do you choose such crazy colors? Is this how you see the world?

Color has always been fascinating to me. Rainbows are my fave! Color really speaks to me, and it helps me to capture the dynamic purity of an animal or person’s energy.

Question: What inspires you?

I see beauty everywhere I look. The natural world, animals, people, art, music and literature all inspire me. The relationship that people have with their animals is also a beautiful thing to me, and humanity’s relationship with nature is something I’ve always explored.

Question: Can I get a painting of my pet done?

Yes! For a complete price list and commission guidelines, visit this link: https://ko-fi.com/dawgart

Question: How much does it cost?

Question: Do you paint from photos?

Yes. Photos taken outdoors, in good light, with no flash are best. They must be of a high enough quality that I can use them as reference. High resolution, good detail. If you have a photo of a pet that has crossed over the rainbow bridge, send it to me and I will let you know if it would work. All hard copy photos used in the commission process are returned with your finished painting. For examples of photos I like, please visit: http://dawgart.deviantart.com/favourites/.

Question: I don't want to pay for a painting. If I send you a photo, will you paint it and add the image to your gallery so I can buy a print?

No. I have too much work between commissions and painting for charity to paint for free.

Question: If I own a piece of DawgArt, do I also own the rights to reproduce that image?

No, you don't. I own the rights to my artwork, even if you paid me to make it. If you would like to reproduce my images in any way, you can contact me and we can discuss compensation. Of course, if you want to take pictures of your painting with your dog sitting next to it, hanging in your living room, etc., that is fine. I would love to see how you have displayed your DawgArt and will add it to my blog to show it off to other people!
