Making dogs pretty and handsome

One day in 2009 a co-worker found out that I had made some pony tail scrunchies for my friend's daughter. She told me that I should make scrunchies for dogs because she couldn't find any on the internet. I made a prototype for her Corgi and it was really fun and she loved it.

I had read about various sites where you could sell handmade goods. I've been sewing since I was in junior high and I used to make a lot of my own clothes, so the idea appealed to me. I checked out various sites and decided I liked Etsy and the ease of setting up a shop.

I started my shop a few years before retirement to see if it would be feasible to make some extra money in retirement while working at home doing something I enjoy. I knew that since I would be starting out part-time, it would take a while to build up business.

It took me almost 4 months to make my first sale. I still remember it. It was on Super Bowl Sunday in 2010. During the first year I was questioning whether it would be a successful venture, but since my city required me to buy a 2-year business license for $150, I decided I should at least stick it out for 2 years. Well, let me tell you, I'm glad I did. By Christmas 2010, things started to pick up. Christmas season 2011 started in September for me and I was really busy. I now have some regular repeat customers, including several therapy dogs and a lady who makes calendars with photos of her dog wearing scrunchies and other apparel. I even have one customer who has purchased scrunchies for her grand-daughter's stuffed dogs.

I get many of my supplies from local craft and fabric stores, but when I go to the internet for fabric or some special adornment, I always shop Etsy first. I like to support other Etsians and it makes me feel like I'm doing my part to make it a community of crafters and artists helping each other.

Since I started my shop I purchased a new digital camera and I have continued to come up with new scrunchie designs. I have gotten better at the photography, but the main improvement is from our dog, Nickie. She's gone from being afraid of the digital camera noise when I turn it on to being a willing model who has developed her own signature poses over time. I've also learned to work my Facebook page my own way: by having customers submit photos of their dogs in the scrunchies and having my dog, Nickie, write the posts. It fits my style perfectly as I'm not a high pressure sales person. I just like to have fun with the Facebook page and my customers seem to really enjoy it.

I have donated scrunchies to the consignment shop at my county's animal shelter and to some rescue organization raffles. Even in retirement since December, 2014, I still feel like I never have enough time to create. My 90-year old father started living with us in October, 2015, so there are always additional errands that come up. I guess it's a good problem that now I'm busy enough that I feel like I have trouble keeping up with demand.

Custom orders require pre-payment before construction is started. A custom order listing that does not get purchased will only be held for the original customer for 2 days after the customer has been notified that the item is ready for pre-payment. One reminder convo will be sent, then the listing will be de-activated.
We ship in-stock items within 2 – 4 business days with delivery confirmation. Custom order shipping with be agreed upon at the time of the order.

We use United States Postal Service for most orders. Shipping costs to international customers may be revised if they are significantly MORE than what we have listed for your country or the "Everywhere Else" choice. We will convo the customer first to work out the details. We try to keep the shipping costs as low as possible, while covering most of our costs, including shipping materials and trips to the P.O. Since we treat the shipping charge as a "Shipping and Handling" cost, we do NOT refund any shipping, except in the case of an error. Please consider the shipping charge as part of the cost of the item you are purchasing. Conversely, since we usually buy insurance on orders with 5 or more scrunchies, we sometimes do not collect enough shipping. We do NOT ask the customer to pay additional shipping in these situations.
Refunds and Exchanges
We will refund your purchase price less the shipping charges for items returned in good condition with 30 days from the date of purchase, except for specialty custom orders that would most likely not be purchased by anyone else. We cannot be responsible for items ruined by your pet.

Due to the nature of the product and the variety of types of dog fur, there is some flexibility in the sizing, but the fit will be better if you order the size range that includes your dog’s neck measurement.

If an item arrives damaged, please contact us immediately and we will replace it or refund your purchase price, after the item has been shipped back to us. If the same material and trim is no longer available, we will strive to replace the item with something similar.

There is no tracking available for first class international shipping and it is rather expensive. If an item does not arrive to an international customer, we will refund the difference between your total purchase price (including shipping) less our ACTUAL shipping cost. Unfortunately, due to shipping costs, we cannot offer to replace the lost/undelivered item unless the buyer wants to pay the shipping cost for the replacement.
Additional policies and FAQs
We sometimes use beads, sequins, buttons or similar ornamentation on our collars. Since some dogs are more aggressive chewers than others, it will be mentioned in the description if we have added something that could be a choking hazard. Please supervise your dog's use of our product for its safety.
