My Watercolour Story

I’ve been painting watercolours since 2000 which is a big change for this lifelong bookkeeper! I started my business of selling my work in 2016, and decided in 2017 to open my Etsy shop to be able to reach more customers. Participating in local shows is fun and I enjoy meeting so many people, but it’s hard physical work, and there just aren’t that many shows around.

Although I am known as Debbie Ellis Watercolours, I had to name my Etsy shop “Debbie Ellis Artworks” because Watercolours was too many letters! And now it turns out that might be a good thing, because I’ve started working with acrylic paint. It’s so different from watercolour. I’m enjoying it so far and maybe soon there will be an acrylic section on my Etsy shop!

Back in 2000, I was looking for a new hobby because I was bored. I flipped through the local Continuing Education and Recreation catalogues for night school classes and noticed a watercolour class. The first class didn’t work out so well, but I was intrigued, so I enrolled again, this time with a different teacher. That was the best thing. She started me on this journey which I am just loving. After retiring 2 years ago from my full-time bookkeeper job, I am enjoying retirement busier than ever, as this watercolour hobby is now a full time job. But so much more fun than bookkeeping!

I paint and teach in my home in Guelph. I have a small bedroom that is set up for my painting studio. But 2 years ago when I started teaching, I was lucky enough to have a large room available for classes and storage of all my display for craft shows. It’s a great room and I’m looking forward to getting back to teaching once it is safe to do so.

My work is of local architecture, vacation memories, florals, rural scenes and commissions. I grew up in Hespeler part of Cambridge and the bulk of my work centres on Hespeler buildings and places, along with other Cambridge locations. They are very popular because people enjoy having a piece of art that means something….perhaps it’s the school they went to…or the church they got married in…or just a street scene from the town they grew up in. Commissions are very popular for the same reason.

I am enjoying being able to paint pictures that bring back memories for people, and hearing their stories about why a painting means so much to them…or the person that they are gifting. It’s very rewarding.
