Recycled Circuit Boards Come Full Circuit By A Circuitous Route
WELCOME to Debby Arem Designs!
As an artist, I am a perfectionist and fascinated by detail, texture and color. I am constantly challenged by how I can combine these three elements into unique 'geekery' jewelry and accessories for the home and office that are sometimes whimsical or abstract, sometimes purely decorative and quite often functional.
Thank you for visiting our shop! I hope you will come back and visit often as we are always adding new items!
Remember, every time you buy a piece of jewelry or something for your home or office that has been made with recycled found objects, you keep something out of a landfill !
Twenty some years ago when we first created a business out of discarded circuit boards, nobody quite got it. In fact, many people thought we were a bit nuts. Recycling wasn't in vogue and ' repurposing ' wasn't even a word in the common vernacular.
Come to think of it, neither was ' upcycled ' or ' being green' .
I like to think that I take after my father who for as long as I can remember, would collect things that others threw out and then find a new use for them. He was always on the hunt for a newly discarded treasure. So seeing a circuit board for the first time and immediately being drawn to the beauty of the colors and patterns, it was perfectly natural for my thought process to go along the lines of " What can I create with this amazing piece of technology that was clearly designed for some other purpose? "
Back in 1992, there was no internet ( who could imagine 'online commerce' ?! ) so all our sales were done the old hard way - meeting in person with museum curators to show the Three Ring Circuit line ( our line was sold at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum shop for instance ) , wholesaling to brick and mortar shops or having our own booth at a craft show.
We knew we were on to something when at our first craft show we sold out of all our recycled circuit board clipboards the first day. Rushing home we made another batch only to again sell out.
We now like to joke that the world finally caught up with us which we realize is a bit of an exaggeration, but we can still recall some of the odd comments tossed our way when Debby Arem Designs ( first established as Three Ring Circuits in 1992 ) was originally introduced to the marketplace. 'Being green' was even a movement and the whole concept of recycling throwaway objects into new ones was a very foreign concept to the majority of people.
What started as a creative whim , quickly grew into a full time business with product after product being added. We were very lucky that all the circuit boards we salvaged were originally created as prototypes for different companies so none had ever been 'stuffed' before and this made the cutting a bit easier but not by much. Just figuring out how to cut a large circuit board into a smaller size or shape was a feat in itself. Many bandaged fingers later, we finally figured it out.
Jewelry was the first item that I tried my hand at - creating earrings, brooches and then cufflinks and tie tacks .
Joel next thought of creating our large line of office products followed by home decor items that I created with my Fine Arts background to guide me .
There's really no end to what we can make since we spent a lot of time dumpster diving in 1992 and rescuing circuit boards before they were hauled off to a landfill.
Dumpster diving is an art in itself - picking and choosing circuit boards that spoke to us , visiting scrap metal facilities and once again foraging for treasure.
Various local department stores allow us to routinely peer into their dumpsters to retrieve clean bubble wrap that is about to be hauled off. It never ceases to amaze us how much perfectly good bubble wrap is tossed each day - during the holiday season, these dumpsters are usually overflowing with plastic.
As our business has evolved, we have never lost site of our goal - to create new products out of cast away circuit boards and do our little part to save the planet.

Owner, Designer, Innovators, Proud Dumpster Divers
We are a husband and wife team who for the past 24 years have created new products out of recycled circuit boards. Quite often we add scrap metal, electronic components or vintage beads to create a lot of visual texture.
Nahani and Mikhaela
These are two of our rescued pets - A Samoyed and a Samoyed/Malamute/Shep. mix. Whenever we're not on our Etsy shops we're very active in rescue work helping to place dogs and cats in their new forever homes.
Yoshi and Bodhi
Our cats are never allowed in our studio because they might try their paws at 'designing' - instead they stay upstairs meditating about their good life.
All the recycled circuit boards that we use were saved from being dumped in landfills 20 years ago at a time when the hazards of recycling electronic products were not recognized, as they are today!
Many times we don't know what these boards were originally manufactured to do but they could have been made for products ranging from computers to telephones, microwave transmitters and other electronic devices.
We believe that every circuit board that we can save and "re-purpose", is one more circuit board that wasn't destroyed in a potentially dangerous way.
We are thrilled that you have chosen to shop in DebbyAremDesigns and to purchase something made from a recycled circuit board. We value your business and want to thank you also for helping to make this world a greener place in which to live. In a 'throw away society', being able to take a circuit board that is no longer of use, and turn it into a new and exciting product, is rewarding for us - we hope it is just as rewarding for you to own !

Accepted payment methods
- Accepts Etsy gift cards
- Money Order
NOTE: Due to sharp increases in postage costs, international shipments can only be accepted if paid using PAYPAL, which affords more flexibility in shipping options. Domestic US orders can be paid using PAYPAL or Direct Checkout.
We are always willing (if our inventory permits ) to do a reserve listing for you if you are interested in a larger number of a certain item.
Etsy convos are the fastest way to contact us as we check our email multiple times a day!
You may also email us at either threerng [!at] verizon.net or debbyaremdesigns [!at] gmail.com if you so chose.
We greatly appreciate immediate payment as we always strive to have a quick turn-around of no longer than 72 hours from the time we receive your order and payment. We know you want your items and we want to ship them as soon as we can so that we don't fall behind in our orders.
If there are ever extenuating circumstances where we will not be able to ship within 72 hours we will have a notice up in our shop to that effect or we will contact you personally.
We currently accept PayPal and Direct Checkout. If PayPal notifies us that you have paid by check, we will ship your items when your check clears, which usually takes about 5 business days. International orders may ONLY be paid using PAYPAL.
When you pay with Direct Check Out, Etsy will notify you automatically that your order has been shipped and there will be a tracking number
We ship to the address provided in the Checkout "SHIP TO" transaction section.
Etsy generates the shipping label that you the customer provide to Etsy and this is what we use.
Please be sure the address is accurate as many times the address that may appear on your PayPal account is different than where you actually want the item to be shipped.
The Buyer will be billed for the additional shipping fees if the package is returned to me because of an incorrect shipping address.
We always try to ship within 72 hours of receiving payment.
*We can insure both DOMESTIC and INTERNATIONAL packages. I use USPS insurance and also third-party coverage, which allows us to mail items by First Class Mail and get insurance for full value.
USPS First Class Mail cannot be tracked once it leaves the USA, and items cannot be insured unless they are shipped via Priority or Express Mail (which is rather expensive). Buyers are responsible for any customs and import taxes that may apply. We are not responsible for delays due to customs.
Some countries are NOT COVERED by third-party insurance plans. We will let you know if this applies to an order you have placed in our shop, and work with you to ship as safely and cost-effectively as possible.
Priority Mail to Canada and Mexico starts at about $20 (small flat rate box) or $29 for a normal package, and to other countries it varies, so please contact us if you need a quote for this kind of shipping. Maximum insured value for a flat rate box is $400.
Priority mail within the USA is $5.50 FOR UP TO 1 lb. of merchandise. Priority mail over 1 pound varies in cost with destination up to about $12.00 for a 3-pound package to California, for example. Please email us if you require any of these options at debbyaremdesigns [!at] gmail.com
Refunds and Exchanges
Your satisfaction is extremely important to us. Everything in our shop is sold with a money-back guarantee.
Please feel free to email us at debbyaremdesigns [!at] gmail.com with questions or any problems.
If you're not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, please email us IMMEDIATELY and state what the problem is.
Please do not leave negative feedback as we are always here and check our email many times a day. We want to make sure you are thrilled with your purchase from our shop and always look forward to the positive feedback that our customers leave us.
If we cannot resolve the problem to your satisfaction, we will refund your purchase cost if the product is returned to us in its ORIGINAL undamaged condition within 7 days after you have received it.
All returns are to be shipped at buyer's expense with tracking.
Please understand that you will only receive a refund for the cost of the item and this will happen only after the item has been received and inspected by us to make sure it has been returned in the same condition as when you purchased it.
Regrettably we cannot refund shipping costs.
➤ALL CUSTOM WORK IS A FINAL SALE AND NON-REFUNDABLE - THIS INCLUDES MODIFICATION OF ANY EXISTING PIECE.
➤Please Note: We have had overseas packages take as long as 2 months on occasion to clear Customs. We can honestly say that we have never lost a package. Once the package leaves the US it is no longer able to be traced if sent by First Class Mail - therefore neither you nor I will have a way of knowing where it is! Priority and Express Mail can be tracked internationally, but the cost is rather high ($20-40).
