About

My journey to this!

I have arrived at silver jewellery making as a career option only relatively recently. But it has always been there on the ‘I’d love to do that’ list.

It can be funny how life turns out.

I have always been interested in the visual arts. My original pathway was drama - a love of acting and theatre as a kid led to my studying for a degree in drama. An enjoyable seven year career as an assistant director in film and tv followed. Towards the end though, I had started to feel that I wanted more control. TV production can be all consuming. I yearned for a better life work balance. I wanted to be able to keep fit and healthy (no time to exercise.) I wanted to put down roots in one place (constantly moving to where the work was) I wanted time for hobbies and interests (see previous). I wanted to get some pets!

I made a list of aspirational alternative career options. Jeweller designer/silversmith was one of them (though I had no experience in this what so ever). Personal Fitness Trainer was another. (Fitness was always a major part of my life)

Two ends of the career spectrum, but a desire to keep healthy and a desire to be creative were my overriding interests then, and still are today. I took myself off on a yoga holiday, determined to make a decision about my career by the time I returned.

I became a personal trainer, (the experience won over!)

I retrained for a diploma in sports conditioning and sports therapy. I set up my own business working from the local gym. I loved the greater control in my life. I loved keeping fit and healthy and helping others reach their goals. I was rooted in one place now. I got my cat! I hoped that I would have time for jewellery making in evening classes or part time courses.

I had 8 happy years as a PT. I loved it and I loved being my own boss.

But I found that I had no time for the jewellery classes I had hoped to pursue. I was always working late at the gym in the evenings. It nagged away at me.

Then, in 2011 you could say that the ‘control’ was taken out of my hands.

I was involved in a serious accident which left me with a shattered ribcage and a collapsed lung. A lengthy stay in hospital followed, along with several operations, titanium plates on my rib cage and a load of rehab to try and get me 'back to normal’. Well, ‘back to normal’ didn’t quite happen. I was off work for months and facing the reality that I was not going to be able to return to the full physical aspects of the second career I had chosen.

It took a lot of coming to terms with. A lot of feeling sorry for myself.

Then, I had a bit of a ‘light bulb’ moment. Now was my chance to pursue the other goal, one I might never have been brave enough to take before. When I was well enough, I signed up for as many evening classes, day classes, workshops and courses in silver jewellery making that I could find. I studied for another diploma in Art and Design. I immersed myself in this new creative learning.

And here I am. Finally brave enough to exhibit my work, just opening my first Etsy shop and hopefully on the right track to making this my '3rd time lucky’ career.
And, of course, I love it! I feel very lucky to be able to work from home in a workshop space in the spare room. It’s tiny and cramped but I’ve got what I need to be able to design and create my work here. My cat wanders in and reminds me it’s dinner time quite frequently!

I consider myself proof of the cliche that ‘when one door closes'…

In the work I create I am inspired by so many things; travels, surroundings, geometry, architecture, environmental issues, nature. I am open to anything and enjoy exploring different ways of developing design ideas in silver and other precious and non-precious materials. It will keep evolving. My work has a simple style, quite minimal. I like clean lines.

I hope that you might find something you like here, and thank you for stopping by (especially if you got to the end of reading all this waffle!)

Above all, enjoy life and if you can, do what makes you happy!
