Welcome to the Deer & Sparrow Store!

Deer & Sparrow sells thoughtful greeting cards, wall art and gifts to help you connect with the people and places that you love.

I’m Judith, the artist, designer and maker behind this warm, friendly and encouraging brand. I live in a small wine growing village just outside Zurich, in Switzerland but I’m originally from Northern Ireland. I moved to Switzerland for one year and never left!

Before Switzerland I went to Art College in Belfast where I received a BA Hons in Art & Design, specialising in Visual Communication. After graduating I worked for five years in an Award-Winning Wedding Stationers & Specialist Paper Shop. It was an exciting job that involved seeing behind the scenes of the wedding and pulling it all together in an invitation that announced the wedding and created excitement for the day ahead. My days were spent designing and making Wedding Stationery from a huge array of papers in many colours, textures and sheens. It was an "Aladdin's Cave" of paper, think unending paper swatches, samples, printer and guillotine. I loved it! I left to move to Switzerland. My husband was offered a fantastic opportunity in Zurich and we moved to Zurich for one year. Many years later we still live in the Kanton of Zurich.

Upon moving to Zurich, I worked for a couple of companies in administration - very different from my creative background. However, I learnt a lot about running a business in Switzerland through these jobs and met lots of wonderful people.

Following a difficult season in life, after my second child was born, I started to draw and design cards again. The spark of creativity was reignited, and I knew it was time to finally to start my own creative business. It was something which I had always wanted to do but had never been brave enough to do. That business is Deer and Sparrow! It is full of work inspired by nature, the sea, the mountains, colour, celebrations, words and coffee. There is a heavy dose of Northern Irish warmth, stories and coast line combined, with the majestic Swiss Alps and Swiss life observed by someone who get to call two places home.

Deer & Sparrow is a colourful, joyful, honest and meaningful brand. It values family and friendship and aims to help you strengthen those cherished relationships with colour, art and words. There is a little humour, some puns, and words that build up rather than tear down. You will find no crude or swear words here or politics.

Deer & Sparrow started with greeting cards and I expect cards to always be at the core of it. Cards are such an easy and fun way to let someone know that you care. I now have three greeting card ranges – Printed, Handmade & Keepsake. The purpose for each of the ranges might be slightly different but the motivation behind them is to connect and celebrate, plus snail mail is the best!

In my Etsy shop you’ll also find some wall art which is inspired by nature, often abstract and sometimes with words. All my wall art has connection at its core whether that is to a place, a person or a celebration. Art is such a powerful way to speak to people and I’m honoured when someone chooses something that I’ve created for their home or friend.

You’ll be able to find parts of my art within all the products sold at Deer and Sparrow. Cards in the Handmade Range have a tiny piece of art as their focal point. You’ll also find details of abstract paintings in most of the hanging decorations, pin badges, prints, pocket mirrors, enamel mugs, key rings and trinket dishes.

Through Deer & Sparrow I hope that you find ways to nurture friendships, share the laughter, show appreciation, celebrate the good times and ways to show you care in the tough times.
