Connecting & Creating Memories with Food

When people ask us how we started our family business, we point to the recession and the collapse of the newspaper journalism industry.

It was early 2010. I was a national correspondent and my newspaper's parent company had filed for bankruptcy. My editors were closing my office and moving my job from the Midwest to Los Angeles. David and I were newly married. We assumed that David would be able to find work fairly easily in California.

We were wrong.

Months passed. We longed to be together. So we started to cook at the same time - three time zones away from one another - and talk on the phone or over Skype. Cooking became our date night, a way we could connect, create memories and share stories of what happened during our day.

Money was tight. But my parents had raised me to believe that you don't have to be rich to eat well. So for holidays and special occasions, we gave our loved ones edible luxuries of our own making. Hand-made infused sugars and salts, for baking cookies or sprinkling over popcorn. BBQ seasonings whipped up to make friends sweat. Homemade spice kits filled with ingredients discovered at organic markets or off-the-beaten-path farms.

A friend suggested we look into opening a shop on Etsy and sell some of our spice mixes. Maybe, she said, it could help offset the cost of our cross-country flights. We started the company and named it after the street where we last lived together: Dell Cove.

It did that. And so much more. The shop helped us reunite back in the Midwest, where we create, mix and package our popcorn seasonings, BBQ spices and cocktail bar supplies.

In September of 2012, David quit his day job at an engineering firm and runs the business full time from our certified and insured commercial kitchen and retail shop in the Old Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago. I'm a journalist by day - and I help David in the evenings and weekends.

The lessons we've learned along the way will carry us throughout our lives. Everyone has a story to tell, so be a good listener. Change is scary - and inevitable. Go ahead and give it a big hug. Ginger helps reduce stress. (But sometimes, all you really need is a good laugh and a glass of great whiskey.)

In 2017, we rebranded our company and changed the name: Dell Cove Spices & More Co.® And in January 2021, in order to be closer to family, we moved our company to northeastern Indiana. We are thrilled to be in our new home in New Haven, Indiana - just outside of Fort Wayne!

WHEN WILL MY ORDER SHIP?

In general, all orders ship within 1 to 2 business days. We do offer expedited shipping services at checkout, such as USPS Express Mail.

You can locate the “ship by” date in your Etsy "cart" before checkout. After checkout, you can find the "ship by" date on the receipt you received from Etsy for your purchase. If you are in need of your package by a specific date, please send us a “convo” us on Etsy before placing your order, to see if we can accommodate your request.

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY ORDER?

That is a great question - and one we unfortunately cannot answer while the pandemic is still going on.

Many people's buying habits changed during the pandemic, and U.S. delivery networks (such as UPS and USPS) cannot keep up. You might already have experienced this, with weeks-long delays on some online shop orders or waking up at 4 a.m. to get an open slot from a grocery delivery company.

This is why we are shipping our orders out in 1 to 2 business days. Our thought is that if we can get your order out fast, then hopefully that will help get your delicious treats to you ASAP - even if the carrier has some delays.

MY ORDER SHOWS THAT IT WAS DELIVERED, BUT I CAN'T FIND IT. WHAT THE HECK DO I DO?

1. Verify the shipping address on your invoice is correct.
2. Look around the delivery location for a notice of attempted delivery. (Is there a sheet of paper on your door or inside your mailbox?)
3. Look around the delivery location for your package. (Was the package left near your back door? In the front bushes?)
4. Check with neighbors and others at the delivery location, to see if someone else accepted the delivery. (This does happen. Shocking, but true!)
5. Contact your local post office, to see if they are holding the package. (The post office may not have been able to deliver the order for some reason.)
6. Wait 48 hours. Why? Packages can show as delivered via USPS, but still actually be in transit.
7. Contact us so we can help!

THE POST OFFICE SAYS THEY ARE UNABLE TO DELIVER MY PACKAGE. WHAT DO I DO?

You will need to go to your local post office branch to pick up your package. If you don't pick up your package from the post office, then USPS will return the order to us after a period of time. If your package is returned to us without a return authorization, then we will assume you have refused delivery. If it was a food product(s) you ordered, the product(s) will be destroyed due to concerns over food safety.

MY ORDER ARRIVED DAMAGED. WHAT DO I DO?

We are happy to replace your order if a package arrives extremely damaged, free of charge. Just take photos of the damaged package, email them to us at david@dellcovespices.com and let us know what happened. We want you and your taste buds to be happy with your purchase!

HOW DO I RETURN MY ORDER?

Items must be unopened and in its original packaging. Contact us by email - at david@dellcovespices.com - to make arrangements for a return, as return authorizations are required. Returns are void if the product arrives back to us damaged, or if items are opened, used or not in original packaging. (We suggest shipping products back via USPS Priority Mail - postal insurance comes automatically!)

Once we have received your return, and inspected the products, we will email you to let you know your return has arrived and we will process your refund.

Wholesale orders are always welcome and we love working with brick and mortar shops! Please note: We do not allow third-party vendors to sell our products on Amazon, Etsy or other e-commerce sites.

WHAT TYPE OF SHIPPING MATERIALS DO YOU USE?

We use biodegradable packing peanuts, which are made from corn. (No styrofoam here, friends.) We also use boxes made from recycled materials. If you know of someone who makes biodegradable packing tape, let us know! (That's been the toughest thing to find.)

I GAVE YOU THE WRONG SHIPPING ADDRESS AND USPS SAYS MY PACKAGE IS BEING RETURNED TO DELL COVE SPICES. WHAT DO I DO?

Bummer! Ok, you have two options:

#1: If the set comes back undamaged, we can invoice you for the cost of the postage to reship the order. On that invoice, we will need you to use the correct shipping address (as Etsy requires us to ship orders to the address on the invoice). If the order returned damaged, we will remake the order and, after the shipping has been paid, ship it out to the new address.

#2: We can cancel and refund your product cost - and you are most welcome to reorder. If you go with this option, please make sure the address you use is complete and the one you would like to have the package delivered too. If you re-purchase your items before the package is returned to us, we will refund you once the items have returned.
