Demesne is a small artisan business, creating home decor and accessories in resin and metal. Every item here is designed, hand carved, molded, cast and finished by veteran jeweler Sarah Christenson. This most recent branch of my sculpting is a fun personal endeavor.

The word 'demesne' comes from the Old French, and means one's estate, land, castle and holdings. I hope to bring a bit of beauty to your own castle.

About

From Hand Jewelry to Wall Jewelry!

I've been sculpting since the age of 7- gritty sandy clay dug out of a hillside and squished into shapes through clumsy fingers. I remember watching my father sculpt dragon figurines around the same time, and he held his breath between carving strokes so as not to disturb the lines. Watching his dedication, and the pieces simply emerge before my eyes, I knew this had to be my future as well.

Apprenticed into the jewelry trade as an adolescent, I learned alongside my dad and sisters, and we eventually founded Wexford Jewelers- now owned by us three sisters and still going strong with all of our designs! Check out our Etsy shop by the same name.

But for as much as I adore creating heirloom jewelry... I found that I missed the 'olden' days when we made inexpensive things and sold them at Renaissance Faires. I also love setting up house in all the places we've moved to, and i have a particular fondness for unique home elements. Out of these desires was born a design line- still emergent- of switchplates and chandeliers and tiny shelves and fun accessories.

I'll still travel the world finding gems for my jewelry business, and I'll still carve tiny blossoms on wedding rings for my favorite clients... but I also have this innate need to create color and sparkle and... well... wall candy!

So, in the winter of 2013, my loyal husband helped me set up a little garage workshop in order to cast and mold resin home decor. Although life has changed ever so much, I still hold my breath when I carve. Who knows what kind of nifty things we'll be making a year from now?

My childhood was spent between the wilds of Michigan and the deserts of Arizona. I knew that I needed to be a sculptor from the moment I dug clay out of a hillside and felt its wet suppleness in my hands. I've been a jeweler and creator ever since.

Frequently asked questions

Care instructions

All resin pieces are UV sensitive, do not leave outside in sunshine for extended periods of time. Switchplates are not recommended for outside use.

Cleaning- use a soft cloth with cleaner applied, avoid spraying the item itself if possible. Soap and warm water is fine as well.

Custom and personalized orders

I seldom have time to accept custom orders. Special paint jobs on existing designs are possible, there's often a $5-20 surcharge for this.

Sizing details

For switchplate fit: if a plate does not sit flush to your wall there are several options.

1. The junction box or switch/outlet can often be unscrewed and pushed further back into the wall.

2. Plate can be trimmed from the backside with a rotary tool by myself (or you if you have the time and tools) to accommodate size.

3. If plate is running into a corner, dado, chair rail, or trim there's often not a fit fix. I will happily accept a return.

Wholesale availability

I currently do not have capacity to fulfill wholesale orders.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Items ship wrapped in tissue and tied in string, ribbon, or silk. My most commonly used tie is sari silk, salvaged from the silk factories of India. This salvage uses scraps and provides extra jobs to Indian women with low education.

Most ring dishes include a small gift box. If any gift wrap is desired, ask at checkout and I'll be happy to accommodate! I can also include gift notes, etc.

The items, once wrapped, are usually shipped in padded envelopes. Multiples of 4 or more will sometimes ship in a corrugated box. If you have a preference or need please ask.
