About

Dotti Price Art

Way back when:

It all began with a mouse...just kidding. But really, it kind of did. Although really, I've been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil, or crayon as it were. I wrote stories and illustrated them and invented my own cartoon-like series of long-haired, Victorian girls. When I was about ten I began drawing Disney characters. I fell in love with the lines and expressiveness. Here entered the mermaid, rather than the mouse, exactly - The Little Mermaid was my favorite and most practiced character. I moved on from there to drawing from beautifully illustrated books, photographs, anything I liked the look of. I was profoundly influenced by the Victorian children's classics and illustrations and Victorian art in general, so you may see some of that kind of detail in my illustrations in particular.

Then, I went to high school and my art teacher taught me to paint. It was my freshman year of high school, and when I was out my second semester due to illness, she tutored me at home. She is responsible for giving me my first brushes, canvas and paint. I continued to paint, often giving my paintings as gifts. My subjects were mainly landscapes from old calendar photos in those days - it was really just practice now that I think of it. I didn't really find my niche until years later when I became more prolific.

Nowadays:

I opened Dotti Price Art on Etsy in 2012, to try my hand at selling my paintings. This shop, as well as Emma Lee Illustration, has gone full time because of the support of my husband, without whom, I literally couldn't be at my home studio at this moment, typing these words. He is the reason I can pursue this way of life, allowing me to quit a job I was not suited for and devote more time to my home, my art, the things, people, and animals I love most. Everyday I wake up to cats in my face because I've slept too long (7:00 is LATE), dozing dogs ready to jump up for our morning hike, a garden and/or trees needing tending, and a whole day to let characters jump out of my head and onto paper or canvas.

To date, I have had my art displayed in several local galleries and businesses, as well as other venues. And I draw still, focusing now on combining paint, colored pencil and ink for the purpose of illustration.

My main subjects are all around me, pulled from my current life here in Tennessee. They are inspired by my home, particularly my love of the outdoors, plants and animals, and activities I enjoy: like gardening and hiking. I'm not sure my art would be half so colorful if it weren't for the inherent local beauty that I have the privilege to see every day. You can't not be inspired by rich, green mountains, dark, verdant forests, and countless specimens of bug, bird and beast.

So, make yourself homey, browse around, comment and share!

Please note that 10% of all sales go to benefit the Idaho Black Bear Rehab. Please help me in supporting this worthy cause by shopping to your heart's content!
