We sell handmade vibrant lampshades, homeware & gifts, all infused with African vibes. I currently work from my home-studio based in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK.

My handcrafted lampshades are my signature & best-selling products. They seem to be gaining quite a reputation, slowly becoming a movement (in my head). I tend to seek out eye-catching African inspired design prints which may be bold, geometric, retro, tribal, botanical, mid-century modern or even geeky too!

They are certainly a quick & easy way to inject splashes of colour into your spaces.

Back in January, we won a 'Best of Houzz 2021' Award.

ALL MY HANDMADE LAMPSHADES ARE SENT OUT USING TRACKED & OR SIGNED FOR POSTAL SERVICES.

PLEASE NOTE THERE MAY BE DELAYS DUE TO COVID-19 AS WELL AS CUSTOMS CHECKS DUE TO BREXIT. BOTH OF THESE ARE TOTALLY OUT OF OUR CONTROL AND WE CAN'T BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE.

I love commissions, special projects & collaborations, especially partnering with interior designers/stylists, property developers, home-stagers, architects etc. I also work with film set & stage designers.

I also sell lampshade making craft kits if you want to make one yourself in the comfort of your home. They come with a chopice of fabric too.

All my products are made in a smoke free & pet free home studio.

Thanks for stopping by!

PERSONALLY SPEAKING
Hi, I'm Tola Laseinde, the designer/maker behind Detola & Geek based in Letchworth Garden City, UK.

This is where my two worlds collide. My love for gorgeous interiors and vibrant African Wax Print fabrics (a.k.a. 'ankara' in Nigerian circles).

It all started from my crazy love of ankara. The popular African material used originally in making clothes for all occasions - be it for everyday, evening, wedding or party wear. It's vibrant, eye-catching, colourful and easily adaptable.

African print fabric is mainly made from 100% cotton fabric although other types of material are used especially cotton-mixes. You can trace the origins of this popular material back to Dutch-Indonesia (and not Africa as most people think). The locals have been applying traditional wax-resist dying methods to produce batik cloths. The outcome of the process are very unique, wonderfully patterned and vibrant fabrics. The Netherlands adapted this technique and modernized it. - hence the term 'Dutch Wax' They started exporting it to Africa (via the Merchant ships). Nowadays a lot of designs result in a clashing mix of exciting colours (And apparently they do work well together)

What makes these African Prints SO unique is the way the patterns & colours run and appear.

I can never get enough of African/ankara wax print fabrics. And literally these fabrics have exploded globally. They're' everywhere. You even see them on famous fashion runways. Brands all over the world now use them in their products - both fashion design and interior home accessories.

NOW THE BUSINESS BIT ...
So I thought to myself one day, as you do, you know what I can do one better! With my love of interior design, I didn't want to delve away from interiors, home decor & accessories. And I have always wanted to make products myself, by hand, using these gorgeous fabrics. And then I had a light bulb moment. LAMPSHADES!!!! Pun so intended.

And the rest is history!

In a nutshell I create “Colourful African Wax Print Fabric Lampshades & Home Décor.
Designs maybe Bold, Geometric, Retro & sometimes Geeky too!”
