"Straddling the border of textiles & homeware, Detola and Geek celebrates the meeting of African design & retro inspiration" ~ House & Garden magazine

PERSONALLY SPEAKING

Hello there, I'm Tola Laseinde, the designer/maker behind Detola and Geek based in Letchworth Garden City, UK. I run the business all by myself from my home studio.

Due to living with a severe long-term health condition I quit my full time job many years ago. Being a single parent - juggling that work-life balance act was just totally impossible too.

And that is how it all started ....
With my crazy love of ankara - as we call it in Nigeria. The popular African material used originally in making clothes for all occasions - be it for everyday, evening, wedding or party wear. It's vibrant, eye-catching, colourful and easily adaptable. This is literally the fabrics of my life as I grew up with them like them due to my African background.

African print fabric is mainly made from cotton textile although other types of material are used too like cotton-mixes. You can trace the origins of this popular material back to Dutch-Indonesia (and not Africa as most people think). The locals have been applying traditional wax-resist dying methods to produce their handcrafted batik cloths. The outcome of the processes are very unique, wonderfully patterned fabrics.
The Netherlands adapted this technique and modernized it. - which is how the term 'Dutch Wax' fabric came to be. They started exporting it to Africa (via the Merchant ships). Nowadays a lot of designs result in a clashing mix of exciting colours which apparently they do work well together.
What makes these African Prints SO unique is the way the patterns & colours run and appear.

NOW THE BUSINESS BIT ...

This is where my two worlds collide. My love for gorgeous interiors and vibrant African Wax Print fabrics (a.k.a. 'ankara' in Nigerian circles).

So I thought to myself one day, as you do, you know what I can do one better! With my love of interior design & spaces, I didn't want to delve away from interiors, home decor & accessories. And I have always wanted to make products myself, by hand, using these gorgeous fabrics. And then I had a light bulb moment. LAMPSHADES!!!! Pun so intended. And the rest is history!

I am a self taught professional lampshade maker and sewer. I have honed my skills over the year especially when it comes to lampshades. I am obsessed with giving them alternative inside linings as well as making some double-lined. I am currently working on some totally new design - so watch this space ;-)

Detola and Geek won ex-Dragon Den Theo Paphitis's 'Small Business Sunday' award in Sep 2016. Most recently we won 'Best of Houzz' award in Jan 2021.

In a nutshell ....
“My Detola & Geek African statement lampshades add colour one 'shade' at a time!"
