About

This is Vespertine: Sustainable Fashion, Refined

My design process begins with inspiration- from a song, a newly discovered locale, another artist, a fabric, a contour of the body, or a feeling that something is missing from my own wardrobe. I create my patterns mainly through draping, and sew many muslins, up to 10 or 12, to perfect the fit.

Everything is created by me in-house from start to finish, with the exception of a few pieces that require specialty machinery during finishing. I get outside help with buttonholes, pressing, specialty seaming & leather application from skilled local artists who have the equipment and expertise.

My philosophy is that good design is created mindfully within the context of the bigger picture: how our actions as women and as consumers impact our lives, the lives of others and the planet. My vision is to support the transitions taking place in women’s lives as they embrace change, and their shift toward making more sustainable choices.

In 2012, I was named as one of Canada’s top 15 Eco Designers in ECOHOLIC BODY, the new book by author and blogger Adria Vasil. I also became a member of Fashion Takes Action, a not-for-profit organization which connects with both consumers and industry professionals to educate, inform and assist them in making sustainable choices.

Seeing a growing gap in ladies fashion, and feeling the need to reflect my re-direction in aesthetics and philosophy, I retired my first label Device and launched Vespertine in the fall of 2013. Vespertine is unique, providing women in their prime with figure-flattering designs in structured fabrics that give them a polished, pulled-together look- sustainably. The contemporary ladies wear line is produced in Toronto, Canada and is available in sizes 2-16 or XS-XXXL.

Vespertine's signature style is inspired by the many incarnations of the modern woman: conscious, effortless, and always, beautiful.

Recovering daydreamer and secret-keeper. As a teenager people would stop me to ask where I'd got my outfit, and I could never admit to being the designer! I suppose I finally got over my shyness.

Welcome to VESPERTINE on Etsy!

Vespertine was launched in the fall of 2013. With its credo “sustainable fashion, refined,” this new label is unique in providing women in their prime with figure-flattering designs in structured fabrics that give them a polished, pulled-together look. The contemporary ladies wear line is produced by me in my Toronto, Canada studio.

Vespertine's signature style is inspired by the many incarnations of the modern woman: conscious, effortless, and always, beautiful. My philosophy is that good design is created mindfully within the context of the bigger picture: how our actions as women and as consumers impact our lives, the lives of others and the planet. My vision is to support the transitions taking place in women’s lives as they embrace change, and their shift toward making more sustainable choices.

With nearly 12 years of industry experience under my belt, you can expect of high level of quality in the fit, construction and finishing of my garments. You can also feel good about your purchase from Vespertine, knowing that I am committed to sustainable practices to minimize negative impacts at all levels of business. Shipping
Vesperine ships domestically and internationally from my studio in Toronto, Canada. In-stock orders are sent out within 1-2 business days of receiving payment, and custom orders take about 3-5 business days for accessories or up to 2-3 weeks for clothing. Check the item listing for estimated processing times. If you have a specific date you need the item by, convo me first and I'll let you know if it's possible to accommodate your request.

> Shipments within Canada are sent via Canada Post Expedited Service, with tracking and insurance included. Delivery takes 5-7 business days on average. Once your order has shipped, you will receive a message via convo with the tracking details.

> Shipments to the USA are sent via Canada Post Trackable AirMail Service for orders over $200, with tracking and insurance included. Orders under $200 are sent via AirMail, which includes insurance but NOT tracking. Delivery takes 6-10 business days on average. Once your order has shipped, you will receive a message via convo with the tracking details.

> International shipments are sent via Canada Post AirMail, which includes insurance but not tracking. Delivery times vary, and can take anywhere from 2-10 weeks depending on the location. Please convo me if you'd like a shipping quote specific to your address.

> Shipping can be upgraded for faster delivery or for tracking upon request at an additional charge- convo me for details.

> If you would like the package delivered to an address other than the one associated with your Etsy account, please let me know in advance. Items purchased as gifts can be personalized with a small card at no additional charge. Each order is packaged beautifully and carefully to protect it from damage due to weather or rough handling.

> Estimating shipping prices can be tricky for clothing, which varies so much in size and weight. Quoting for shipping outside of Canada or the US is especially difficult, so I lump it all in to 'everywhere else'. I only know the shipping price once I've been to the post office, so my policy is to refund any overcharges on shipping greater than $2. If underestimated, then it's on me. Convo me if you'd like a quote specific to your location prior to ordering.

> All orders are sent with the necessary paperwork required for customs, and the full value of the order is declared in Canadian Dollars. If your order is shipping internationally, please note that customs clearance procedures could result in a delay in delivery. Please note that any customs charges which may apply are the responsibility of the buyer.

Each item is made with the utmost care and is subject to much scrutiny and testing. However, in the event that the item you ordered isn't quite what you expected, please get in touch with us to discuss it. An exchange or return may be in order as outlined below. Above all I want to provide the best customer experience possible. Read the policies below carefully, follow the steps for either an exchange or a refund, and remember, you can always convo me with any additional order or product-related questions or issues. I respond to all convos within 1-2 business days.

> Any exchange or return must be approved in advance by sending me a convo with the details within 15 days of receipt of your delivery.

> In-stock and made-to-order items in standard sizing can be exchanged for any item or items of your choice. Any difference in cost will be invoiced or refunded accordingly. However, availability of specific items is subject to change and cannot be guaranteed.

> In-stock and made-to-order items in standard sizing qualify for a return only in the event that they arrive in damaged or flawed condition.

> In case of a shipping error by Vespertine, both the purchase price and shipping cost will be refunded, and I will also reimburse the cost of return shipping upon receipt of the the item.

> Once your exchange or refund is approved, ensure that the item is packaged and sealed with the proper care and protection to the address provided. The cost of shipping on an exchange or return is the responsibility of the buyer, and the original shipping cost will not be refunded.

> Items sent to Vespertine for exchange or return must be in 100% new condition (ie. not worn or washed). We recommend sending the package via a trackable service with insurance, as lost packages cannot be exchanged or refunded.

> Exchanges and returns are processed within 5 business days of receipt, and a status notification will be sent via convo. Items for exchange will be processed according to their availability and stock status. Returns will be issued via your original payment method where possible or PayPal.

Additional policies and FAQs
SIZING
Vespertine sizing is based on the following body measurements: Bust (the circumference around the widest area of the bust), Waist (circumference of the smallest part of your waist, where the measuring tape will naturally settle), and Hips (circumference of the widest part of your hips and rear). I work in inches.

Size Chart:
2/XS: Bust 33" Waist 26" Hips 36"
4/S: Bust 35" Waist 28" Hips 38"
6/M: Bust 37" Waist 30" Hips 40"
8/L: Bust 39" Waist 32" Hips 42"
10/XL: Bust 41" Waist 34" Hips 44"
12/XXL: Bust 43" Waist 36" Hips 46"
14/XXL: Bust 45-47" Waist 34-36" Hips 44-46"
16/XXXL:Bust 47" Waist 36" Hips 46"

To take your measurements accurately, wear snug clothing and stand in front of a mirror. The tape should stay parallel to the floor, and float over the body without pulling- too much tension will squeeze the body and cause errors.

No measuring tape? Here's a great tip: use a length of string, ribbon or cord instead. Mark off your circumference where the ends meet, then remove the string and measure between markings with a ruler.

If you don't see your size listed on the chart, or if you are unsure which size is best for you, please convo me and I'll be happy to advise. Depending on the item, I may be able to do a custom size- be sure to include your measurements, and any any special considerations (eg. height).

WHAT EXACTLY IS SUSTAINABILITY, AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO FASHION?
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. For us humans, it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, achieved by creating systems which can be supported indefinitely in terms of environmental and social responsibility. Sustainable fashion describes designs that are created and produced with consideration to the environmental and social impact they will have throughout their creation and life span. Those considerations include waste reduction, recycling, textile sourcing, labour practices and quality control.

WHAT MAKES VESPERTINE SUSTAINABLE?
Vespertine is sustainable fashion, refined. I'm proud to:
> Produce all items in Toronto, Canada
> Use only eco-friendly fabrics, including GOTS-certified organic cotton, modal and bolt ends
> Choose FSC-certified and/or recycled paper products for printing & packaging
> Package orders in biodegradable protective clear bags made from plants, a plastic alternative
> Reduce waste and increase recycling during sample making, patternmaking and cutting
> Make products built to last through many seasons
> Be an advocate for sustainable practices in the fashion industry. Vespertine is a proud member of Fashion Takes Action, a not for profit organization that connects with both consumers and industry professionals to educate, inform and assist them in making sustainable choices

DO YOU OFFER OTHER COLOURS?
If you like an item but wish it came in another colour, convo me and I may be able to accommodate you with a custom order. Please be aware that individual computer screens may display colours slightly differently.

DO YOU TAKE CUSTOM ORDERS?
I'm always interested in hearing your requests for custom orders! Whether it is a variation of an existing item in the shop, a custom size or a completely custom design, please convo me to discuss.

ARE THESE GARMENTS MACHINE WASHABLE?
All items come labelled with washing and care instructions. Most non-wool pieces are either machine or hand washable and should be hung or laid flat to dry. Dryers will shorten the life of any garment. I highly recommend a phosphate-free laundry soap. Eco-friendly laundering is a powerful (and easy) way you can "green" your wardrobe. See below for more information.

HOW DO I USE COUPON CODES?
