Nel 1998 ho lasciato il mio lavoro quotidiano e ho iniziato a cucire. Ho iniziato con le mie classiche floppy doll a 2 teste e vari mostri che fanno rumore. Ho avuto un successo immediato vendendoli attraverso negozi locali e in alcune mostre di artigianato. Era un periodo in cui peluche e mostri erano ancora una novità e per fortuna sono stato accolto a braccia aperte. Le mie apparizioni locali in qualche modo, miracolosamente, hanno portato a una mostra collettiva al Seattle Art Museum. Presentava diversi artisti locali che usavano il cucito come forma d'arte. Avevo un intero muro enorme e una piccola parete laterale piena delle mie bambole. A volte mi sento come se avessi sognato quella parte, ma era reale ed era gloriosa!
Da allora ho continuato a far parte di molte mostre in galleria in tutto il mondo. Vendo i miei pezzi più semplici a molti negozi e frequento un gran numero di spettacoli e convention astuti, oltre a vendere sul mio sito web (www.devoutdolls.com) e qui su Etsy.
Ho iniziato con le mie bambole di base e il peluche qui, ma man mano che la mia ossessione per le altre bambole cresceva, cresceva anche il mio bisogno di creare vestiti per loro. Fortunatamente l'abbigliamento delle bambole è stato un enorme successo per me. Ho iniziato a fare abbigliamento da bambola sul lato, per divertimento, ma da allora ha preso il sopravvento ed è diventato una parte importante dell'Impero Devoto (è così che lo chiamo ora, inizierò il mio paese dopo). Tutti salutano Blythe e i suoi servitori dolly!
In 1998 I quit my day job and started sewing. I began with my classic 2 headed Floppy Dolls and various noise making monsters. I had instant success with selling them through local stores and at a few craft shows. It was a time when plush and monsters were still a new-ish thing and luckily I was welcomed with open arms. My local appearances somehow, miraculously, led to a group show at the Seattle Art Museum. It featured several local artist who used sewing as an art form. I had a whole huge wall and a little side wall filled with my dolls. Sometimes I feel like I dreamed that part, but it was real and it was glorious!
Since then I've continued to be part of many gallery shows all over the world. I sell my simpler pieces to many stores and frequent a large number of crafty shows and conventions as well as selling on my website (www.devoutdolls.com) and here on Etsy.
I started with my basic dolls and plush on here but as my obsession with other dolls grew, so did my need to make clothing for them. Happily the doll clothing has been a huge success for me. I started doing doll clothing on the side, for fun, but since then it has taken over and become a big part of the Devout Empire (that's what I'm calling it now, I'll be starting my own country next).
