About

Saving Books from Extinction -- designing them for a higher repurpose

“Handmade gifts are the most meaningful.” I’ve been preaching this to my kids every Christmas morning since the days when they gave glitter-covered popsicle stick sculptures and finger-paint originals. Believing my own words, each Christmas I fondly place handmade gifts under the tree. My first journal was lovingly made for my daughter, an aspiring novelist.

I enjoyed making hers so much that I decided to make one for my son. He is hardly an avid writer, but loves to hike and camp. My gift has been a great way for him to keep a log of his adventures. My husband, who enjoys writing poetry, also received a book. Unfortunately, his father became ill recently. But, the two of them have been able to enjoy my gift together – my husband is recording his father’s childhood memories inside.

Well, the following year I started making journals as gifts for friends: baby showers, weddings, end of the school year, graduation, hostess appreciation, eagle scout congratulations, vacation send off, and get well soon. By autumn of 2011, my daughter and a girlfriend had convinced me to open this shop.

I love the escalating idea that a novelist’s creation has been repurposed as my creation; and the interior will become your own creation. I love that anything imagined and drawn on the pages will instantly have that aura of ‘special.’ It’s also comforting to know that it’s not necessary to write anything inside – books are beautiful! It’s natural for book lovers to have books as art!

Now, I admit….not all our family Christmas gifts are handmade – I’m not THAT good. On Christmas of 2011, a Kindle Fire made its way into our home. It’s arrival got me thinking about the journals I have been making. Maybe there is more to my shop than I realize. Perhaps, in the near future the hard-back book is doomed! As my dramatic-aspiring-novelist-daughter might say, “This shop represents more than an art form. This shop is on a mission to save books from extinction!”
