From Nightmares to a Free-Trade Reality
"Nightmares were a usual haunting for Rachel. She struggles with major depression and at times her hallucinations got out of hand. One dreary day in November 2007, a small red goat by the name of Goatie. In a sense, he made most the bad things go away. So in return, she allowed him to enter our world, the 'real' world as they call it. And so he was reborn as a plush."
That was our original story when we began in late 2007. It's true to say the least. I, Rei, use to have terrible nightmares that I couldn't differentiate from reality. I had major depression (it's possible to overcome it but it was not easy) and questioned my point of existence. In my dreams, I'd see creatures and monsters. I'd wake up and sketch what I had seen. After a while it became the same thing but one morning I sketched up Goatie. He didn't scare me, he made me feel safe. His creation is what helped me find a light at the end of the tunnel. I came from a family of seamstress (from El Salvador), yet I didn't pick a needle up until the age of thirteen- when I decided I would make Goatie from scraps. I started off with hand sewn plush toys which quickly gained popularity in the two high schools I attended.
Being the Latinx duo living in urban South Los Angeles, we knew that it was our mission to stand out- to be the change that we wanted to see. Mary (Queen Fig) and I make all items ourselves and occasionally get help from our friends. We believe in a free-trade system where work doesn't have to be sent overseas or where one can cut corners to avoid proper payment of their worker. We also believe in using all the material (new and already existing) so that we can cut down on waste and help the environment. We like to think of our selves as eco-fashion warriors.
Divine Fig's purpose is to be a movement that creates change in their local community. Their goal is to be a lifestyle brand that can impact the global ethics of fashion.
Divine Fig is growing and looking for members to help with local events and projects.
