Gemstones to Jewelry

DLC Gems was born out of Don and Dave's passion for lapidary and gems.

Don began cutting and polishing cabochons from gemstones that he collected as a hobby and quickly found himself needing a method for setting these stones and getting finished pieces into the hands of people who would enjoy them. He taught himself the technique of wrapping cabochons in precious metal wire and eventually branched out into viking weave, carving, fold forming and silver smithing; skills passed down to him from his father Dave.

Dave started his journey similarly but quickly found himself bored of standard cabochon cutting and had an opportunity to study the art of Gem Carving from master gem carver Ron Martinez in Quartzsite Arizona. After studying with Ron for 3 years Dave branched out in to smithing in precious metals to set his carving work into finished pieces of jewelry.. Don and Dave founded DLC Gems LLC in 2011 and now travel Arizona and Utah selling their Artisan Jewelry at various art shows throughout the spring and summer. DLC Gems is a regular vendor at the Tuacahn Saturday Market in Ivins, Utah.

Damaged or defective Items

If your item arrives damaged, or a mistake was made in the manufacturing process, we will replace and or repair the item to the best of our ability. Finding perfect replacements for semi-precious gemstones near impossible, even when cut from the same rock. In these cases, I will make my best effort to find the best match possible with the stocks I have available. In the event that I cannot find a good match for the original stone, I will offer you alternative stones, or a refund.

Please note that all fabricated rings will have a seam where two ends are brought together to make a circle. We do our best to make this seam as invisible as possible, but on some items, a perfectly hidden seam is impossible. This is most noticeable on heavily patterned wire rings, and Celtic Knot rings that must be sized to order where the pattern is cut and then soldered together. Seams are not considered a defect and are a part of the hand-made fabrication process.

Likewise on cast items with a very detailed pattern, the sprue where the mold was attached to the sprue tree during the casting process will cause a slight deformation in the pattern of the finished piece. This is part of the hand-casting process we do and is not considered a defect.

Small, minor imperfections due to the hand built, hand fabricated nature of our products are not considered defects. Rather, they signify that the item is genuine, and hand-built, by the hands of a small family of American artisans and have not been mass-produced by machines or by slave labor in impoverished countries.
We accept payments by Credit Card and PayPal. Money orders and Personal Checks are not accepted.

Engraving and Stamping

We do not currently offer engraving services. Items can be engraved afterward by your local trophy and commemorative engraving company.

Care Instructions for Copper, Brass and Bronze items

Copper, Brass and Bronze items quickly tarnish and can cause a verdigris reaction with your skin. To polish these items, simply wipe with a jewelry polishing cloth regularly to keep it bright and shiny.

If you experience a verdigris reaction when wearing the item, wash with soap and water to remove the coloration from your skin, and clean the jewelry item with a soft, dry cloth. Verdigris is accelerated by damp, salty skin contact and exposure to harsh chemicals (bleach, ammonia). Keeping the item dry and your skin dry will help keep the reaction to a minimum.

What is the difference between Brass and Gold?

Brass is an alloy of copper containing 70% copper, 30% zinc. Polished brass has a look similar to 14 karat gold but it does not have any of the anti-tarnishing properties of gold. Brass will tarnish rapidly depending on exposure to moisture, salts and body chemistry. Please do not buy brass with the expectation that it will wear like gold. Additionally, brass rings are constructed with silver solder. All brass rings will have a seam of silver where the ring was joined. This seam becomes more noticeable as the brass tarnishes.

What kind of metals do we use in our Jewelry?

.999 Fine Silver

.925 Sterling Silver a traditional alloy of 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% copper.

Alloy 230 Brass 85% copper 15% zinc also known as Jeweler's Brass, Red Brass, NU Gold, Merlin's Gold.

.999 Pure Copper

14K Yellow Gold a traditional alloy of approximately 58% gold, 19% silver, 11% copper and 11% zinc.

14K Gold Filled metal contains a brass core and a machine rolled on coating of solid 14k gold. This coating of 14K gold is thicker and more durable than a gold plating.

All of our metals are manufactured in the USA from recycled green sources.
