About

I specialize in original custom realistic watercolor paintings, pencil drawings and portraits of people, pets and scenes from your favorite photos.

My name is Donna Newsom, and if you love people, pets and places you've traveled to, we have a lot in common.

As a kid going to an American Christian boarding school in the mountains of Guatemala, my favorite subject was art. Every chance I got I was drawing faces of people in the literature I was studying. After 9th grade, my parents and I moved to Texas. The school I went to didn't have much of an art program, so I studied Spanish and vocational drafting to use my drawing skills. When I graduated from high school, I couldn't wait to go to art school to study at The Art Institute of Dallas.

I specialized in illustration and began my career with newspaper ads, children's books and editorials for the Dallas Times Herald. After a year of work in Dallas, I was invited to return to Guatemala to illustrate Mayan language and Spanish primers for a Bible literacy mission. Over the two-year assignment, I learned a lot about life in Guatemala during the civil war of the early 80s and expressed my impressions of Guatemala in watercolor paintings for dear friends there.

Returning to Dallas, TX, from Central America, I began pursuing a career in advertising as a production artist/illustrator. My career moved into the digital age of computers and design software, opening more creative avenues to learn and explore, but more recently I have rediscovered my love of drawing and painting. Since I began working in the service industry in 2011, I am really enjoying doing art for the joy of it again after 30 years in the commercial art business. It began when I picked up a pencil and paint brush to paint a portrait of a friend's Bassett hound, followed by a portrait of another friend and her daughter. Since then, I have begun doing commissioned portraits.

Now, creating original drawings and paintings for people of dear family and beloved pets has become my passion. My friends tell me I make people feel loved, I see the best in people. I truly do love others because of Christ's great Love for me and all His creation. I want to serve and participate more in people's lives, and getting to know the subjects of my portraits and their families and pets is a precious gift. I am blessed with a simple life doing a job I enjoy, coming home to my chihuahua and calico and black cats and painting portraits of loved ones and their pets. I would love to get to know you and create a special painting or drawing for you.

God bless!
