About dogandbutterflyNYC

Sales 381
On Etsy since 2011

I collect and make things with antique and vintage wallpapers from the 1900s-1970s.

-SHOP NAME -

My shop is named for the song by Heart from 1978. If you don't know it, you should.

"See the dog and butterfly
Up in the air he likes to fly
Dog and butterfly
Below she had to try
She roll back down to the warm soft ground, laughing
She don't know why, she don't know why
Dog and butterfly"

- LOGO -

My logo features a Boston Terrier in tribute to my sweet Bosco, who was my faithful companion from 2001-2015.

- VINTAGE WALLPAPER OBSESSION -

In 2010 or 2011, I awoke one morning with the idea that I wanted to make collaged vintage wallpaper ornaments. It was a fully formed concept, despite my never having had any exposure to or interest in vintage wallpaper. I heeded the call from the universe and began my search for materials to realize my vision.

I purchased small amounts of wallpaper from a couple of collectors I found online and was struck by its beauty, variety, and craftsmanship. I figured out how to use it to decoupage paper mache ornaments. They were a hit with my friends and family. I bought more wallpaper, made more ornaments, repeat.

For the next couple of years, I continued the project during the holiday season. Eventually, I accumulated a bunch of small pieces of wallpaper that were far to pretty to throw away. I decided to make jewelry. I bought more wallpaper.

In late 2014, I moved to NYC to pursue my other life as a sculptor. I brought my wallpaper stash. After a couple of years in the city, I joined the NY Handmade Collective, which started as the Etsy team for the area. I started selling with them at events, and I bought more wallpaper.

Now, I have what some would say is a lot of wallpaper. I buy it from all over the world, wherever I can find it, as much as I can. Sometimes it's a small remnant, sometimes a full roll. Because it is a finite resource, and continues to deteriorate if left unprotected, I feel a certain sense of urgency.

I also just love it, and there are many papers I have and adore but of which I know I cannot get any more. So in order to keep buying it, I want and need to share it. My apartment is quite small, and my studio is quite full. Ultimately, I want it to be regularly seen and enjoyed, so I offer formats that lend themselves to seasonal (ornaments), personal (jewelry), and domestic (small walls) interactions. I know you'll be just as taken with it as I am.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you get the wallpaper?

I started by buying small quantities from a couple of collectors I found online. Once I fell in love with antique and vintage wallpaper, I began purchasing larger quantities of my favorite papers. Now that I’m totally obsessed, I buy wallpaper from all over the world, wherever I can find it, as much as I can. It’s getting harder to find, and is a limited resource, so I make lists of what I hope to buy and visit it from time to time.

Are these reproductions?

No, these are the actual antique and vintage papers, printed between 1900 and 1970. Many of them are quite fragile, depending on age, how they’ve been stored, the inks that were used, etc.
