About

Sit... Stay... Knit... Purl... Knit Knit Knit Knit Knit Knit...

I've been knitting for hounds and their humans for several years now... it's a lot more fun to me than making sweaters and baby blankets and the usual kinds of things that people seem to like to knit.. For most of my adult life, I'v been heavily involved with dog rescue groups , particularly with miniature pinschers and more recently with retired racing greyhounds, galgos and other sighthounds. Now that I'm (almost) retired and my life situation has changed, I can no longer work on the front lines of rescue, or even do transport or help with fostering. I can, however, knit.. .and the proceeds from my knitting help support dog rescue groups both in the US and abroad. (Oh.. if you belong to a registered animal charity/rescue group and would like some knitted items donated for your fundraising efforts... please send me a message. I am more than happy to donate as many items as I can to help you raise money.)

I learned how to knit when I was about four years old... at that time, in England, almost every little girl learned how and I remember seeing almost every female relative I knew with knitting needles in their hands at one time or another. In the mid-eighties I became a production knitter and learned how to use the technology of the day to produce vast amounts of knitted fabric relatively quickly. I still have the first knitting machine I ever bought... back in 1982. It even still works and I used it to make the Hound-Headed Christmas stockings listed in my shop. Since then I've acquired quite a few other knitting machines; they all do something a bit different and they are all old and cantankerous but I can usually get them up and running with a bit of persuasion. All of the knitted items in my shop are made on one of these vintage Brother knitting machines, which means I can work out designs and patterns in hours instead of the weeks it would take to hand knit all the samples. These days, I hand knit for pleasure and machine knit for production... I never met a color I didn't like so once I work out a new design I make it in every color I can get my hands on.

Although I live in Alabama, I love making warm toasty hats and soft luxurious scarves. Yes, I know it only gets cold enough here to wear them maybe two days a year... and I just stay inside on those two days... but I just pretend I live in Alaska and knit things to keep you warm when it's cold outside. I also like making things a little bit different.... like the hound-headed Christmas stockings... and I have lots of ideas coming up just as soon as I find time to work them out properly.

Although most of my designs are greyhound/whippet/Italian greyhound/galgo related, if you want something made with a different dog breed design, just let me know. It may take me a minute but I can probably work out something you'll just love.

  • Percy

    Assistant

Percy is a miniature pinscher rescued off the streets on Christmas Eve 2014. He is the Quality Control Inspector here at Doghouse Knits....sometimes he unravels my knitting and inspects the stitches just to make sure I've done it right.

  • Bonnie

    Assistant

Bonnie is a retired racing greyhound from the track in Birmingham, Alabama. She monitors my greyhound designs closely for accuracy.

  • Clyde

    Assistant

Clyde is a bloodhound/Great Pyrenees mix born out of wedlock and under the house down the road. He is the Chairman of the Bored and has the important job of holding down the floor when I'm running one of my machines.

Returns and exchanges
All of your purchases from Doghouse Knits are covered by the HORRIBLE HOUND GUARANTEE. This means that if your hound steals your beautiful new knit and tries to wear it himself… or takes it for a walk through the compost pile… farts heavily on it, turns it back into a pile of string or just plain eats it…I will replace it for FREE. Just email me a pic of the crime scene and/or the victim and perp together along with the alleged story of what happened. I will duplicate the item as closely as possible (depending on yarn availability) and send you a replacement item… you don’t even have to pay shipping!

If you receive an item that you just don't like.. for whatever reason (color, fit, etc), simply return it in the same condition you received it and I will refund the full purchase price. If an item is damaged or lost in shipping, I will replace it. I want you to be happy.. if you're not happy, I'm not happy.
Payment
Payment can be made with Etsy gift cards or all major credit cards through Paypal during the Etsy checkout process. For large custom knitted items, 50% of the purchase price is required before I start the design.. this is nonrefundable. Once the piece is completed I will send you a picture of the finished item. If it meets your approval, the balance due must be paid before the item will be shipped. If the remaining payment is not received within 10 business days the order will be cancelled and the piece will be donated to the next dog charity that requests my help in fundraising.
