I absolutely love my cup by Kate!!! It's simply stunning! I just read her "about" section and can't believe she has only been a potter for a few years. I'm a huge pottery fan, and this is by far one of my favorite and most gorgeous pieces. ❤️❤️

About

Small-batch handcrafted functional ceramics made in Asheville, NC

Hi, my name is Kate Donovan-Roach and I grew up in New Milford, CT. Every summer my family would visit Cape Cod, and you certainly see that influence in my color choices and obsessive use of stripes, inspired by buoys and all things nautical.

After graduating high school in the late 90s, I traveled around the US for a couple of years, attending festivals and concerts. I paid my way by selling handmade clothing that I had designed and sewn. You can still see that influence in some of my ceramic work today, especially in my use of stitching lines.

Eventually it was time to see what college was all about, so I attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and got a degree in photography. I still like to play around with making pinhole cameras out of ceramics and messing around with film. You can see some of my photographic work at www.marykatherinedonovan.com

From there I wanted to try something completely different, so I got on a Greyhound bus and moved to Asheville, NC in 2004. I thought I wanted to be a high school art teacher, so I went back to school for my teaching license at UNC-Asheville. I had to take a ceramic class as part of that program and quickly fell down the rabbit hole. I switched my major and never looked back. I'll always love photography but clay is my obsession. I graduated with my BFA in ceramics in 2013 and have been fortunate enough to start setting up my studio in our guest bedroom. I've spent the last year designing the work you see here and I hope you like it!
