About

Order of my obsessions: cloth diapers, fabric, sewing!

<<< For a gallery of my past creations, please visit http://www.Dorybird.blogspot.com >>>

I'm not one of those people whose grandmother taught her to sew when she was 7. Nope! Drawing has always been my thing, and writing. I still do those to some extent, but really I spend every waking moment wanting to sew!

How did Dorybird Designs start? Back when my first daughter was born, I knew I wanted to cloth diaper. I was happy to purchase mainstream diapers and learn everything there is to know about cloth (seriously, ask me anything)! Once she was out of diapers, I had fun creating intricate hand-painted shirts for her to wear, and ventured to make a few training pants, too.

I hand-painted shirts for awhile for friends, but it was when a couple friends became pregnant (around 2014) that I finally dove into sewing cloth diapers for them! I had SO MUCH FUN seeing the teeny newborn fitteds and crazy prints on pockets that I made with my own two hands, that I began sewing shirts and other clothing for my daughter, too! Commence fabric obsession and a constant desire to improve my sewing skills!! . . . . >>>>

My second daughter is now two and she has worn many Dorybird cloth diaper prototypes as I've tested different styles and inserts to get to what I think is a pretty sweet design! (See my All About the Dorybird Diaper Design listing for details!)

I continue to pick up new patterns, experiment with designs here and there, and create all the beautiful fabric combinations I envision -- both for my girls and for the shop. I just love playing with the bright colors and soft textures of knits. Seeing adorable children looking extra adorable in the clothes I've made is so exciting! I love making unique, comfortable pieces that both kids and their grownups find fun to wear!

I hope you like Dorybird, too!

Frequently asked questions
When and how do you ship?

I ship via USPS in the cheapest way possible. Sometimes Etsy overcharges shipping, and I will refund you any overages over $1.00. Contact me if you'd like shipping insurance or faster upgrades. In most cases, in-stock items will ship the next business day. I am a mommy and sometimes the kids do interfere with my plans!

Where is your clothing size chart?

Each listing will have the measurements of that item. Most items run true-to-size or with a bit of room for growth. Please measure your child to ensure the best fit!

Tell me about clothing construction and care!

Items sewn in the art room of my smoke-free, cat/dog friendly home. All knit clothes are sewn with a stretch stitch and seams are reinforced for durability. When using woven quilting cotton I secure all the edges. I prewash fabrics in unscented free&clear CD-safe detergent both before sewing AND give each item one gentle wash after construction to remove any fabric marker.

Wash as you would your child's regular laundry. For maximum life of the clothes, I would choose a cold wash and tumble dry on medium or low.

Diapers: follow standard cloth diaper washing instructions; typically spray off solids as soon as you can, then a hot wash on "heavy soil" setting (high agitation), followed by an extra rinse. Then dry on medium or line dry.

Can I order something I like in a different size?

Possibly -- contact me! Most of my ready-to-ship items are very limited, but I may have extra fabric on hand to make a certain combo again.

Or, I might have enough of a print you like to use it on a different type of item!

Are you CPSIA compliant?

Yes: My suppliers source materials that are free of harmful substances and are themselves compliant.

Each item I sell has the compliant care tag information.

Clothing is made from cotton or cotton/spandex (often organic). Diaper shells are polyester suedecloth and PUL (mostly Eco-PUL), with inserts made of natural fibers: cotton, hemp, and rayon from bamboo. Snaps are KAM snaps (compliant).

And by the way, my mailers are made of 100% recycled plastic, and are reusable (or sometimes I reuse a mailer)! Yay!

I'm basically trying my best as a WAHM to keep everything safe and happy!

Do you take custom orders?

I am a maker of baby and kid clothes, cloth diapers, and quilts. I work within that expertise to make the items you see in my shop. I can modify fabric choices and sizes, add pockets, knee patches, colorblocking, and relatively minor things like that.

If you like something that sold, I might be able to recreate it or make a different size.

But, I do NOT do custom orders for items that you don't see offered already. I'm good at making the things I make, and I'm not a magician -- so I can't make you an authentic Civil War costume, or a women's maxi dress, or a leather purse -- items that would be outside the scope of my experience and what my shop is about.

I often add new styles, so check back regularly! Thank you for your understanding.

Hey, what IS that extra wing snap on the front of the diapers for?

That is a crossover snap, to easily close your clean diapers neatly for storage! ;) Also works well for rolling them up when out and about -- keeps your wetbag cleaner. ;)
