Downeast Watercolors features colorful, realistic paintings of coastal Maine by Beth Whitney

Maine is one of the most beautiful states with the most varied scenery anywhere. I've spent most of my life hiking in Acadia National Park, collecting sea glass on Deer Isle, looking for the elusive moose in Baxter State Park, watching the crashing surf at Giant Stairs on Bailey Island, taking day sails from Camden, enjoying the latest flowers at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and much more. I'm always looking for new places and subjects to explore and share with you through my watercolors.

I generally paint happy, sunshine days that I wish I could bottle up and relive again and again. The light also reveals more about the world around us than we might notice otherwise. It could be that fresh early morning light waking a sleepy garden or warm afternoon sun creating sparkles across the water's surface. Notice how the light illuminates a wave, making it perfectly transparent before it crashes back down in the surf or the sun shining through shallow water to reveal its depths. I call those "perfect moments" because you remember each one and how you felt when you were in it. I want you, the viewer, to immerse yourself in the scene, enjoying that perfect moment and the peace found there. Even if you've never been to Portland Head Light, you can look at my painting and smell the beach roses, taste the salty air, hear the surf rolling rocks over, and feel the warm sunshine on your face. No matter how stressful your day, you feel better with that mini escape. Art is powerful!

I've been painting professionally for 20 years, and my original paintings are enjoyed by collectors throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. You may see more original watercolors on my website, https://DowneastWatercolors.com.

Please feel free to get in touch via convo here on Etsy or email me at beth [!at] downeastwatercolors.com. I don't accept commissions, but I do welcome suggestions of things you'd like to see me paint next.

Frequently asked questions
What is a giclee print?

Giclee prints use high-resolution digital scans and special pigment-based inks to create incredibly detailed reproductions. My paper is 100% cotton rag, which really shows off the colors. The colors are crisp, vibrant, and perfectly mirror those of the original paintings. Because I do my own printing, I'm able to ensure the accuracy of each reproduction.

Framing & Displaying

I use standard sized mats, so you can either buy the frame off the shelf or have your local framer offer expert advice and a vast selection of styles and colors. I recommend using UV glass or plexi for original watercolors, which will help protect your art from the sun's damaging light. I'm glad to give you ideas on sourcing glass and frames.

For prints, it's a matter of buying a frame, washing the glass, and slipping into the frame. No special glazing needed.

Whether you use UV glass or not, art should be displayed away from direct or very bright light to avoid fading.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Each painting or print is wrapped in beautiful blue or green tissue paper. I also include a small thank you card in the package. This is pretty to receive for yourself, but it's also a nice way to send a complete gift to someone special.
