About

Downeast Watercolors features original paintings of Maine by Beth Whitney

My purpose in painting is to celebrate God's creative work through the dynamic medium of watercolor. All of creation proclaims the glory of God, and we're surrounded by the evidences of His gorgeous handiwork. Living in the beautiful state of Maine, I find wonderful places to inspire my creativity everywhere I turn. I enjoy painting this beauty and sharing with others.

I was raised along the coast of Maine and have been an artist for as long as I can remember. Whether hiking in Acadia National Park, collecting sea glass on Deer Isle, searching for moose in Baxter State Park, rock-hopping on Schoodic Point, exploring the latest blooms at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, or taking a day sail from Camden, I have always been enchanted by the beauty of Maine. I never go far without my camera so I can capture reference material for future paintings.

Over the years, my watercolors have been exhibited through several galleries, numerous juried outdoor art shows, and solo exhibitions. Today, my paintings are available exclusively through the web, accessible to everyone to view and purchase regardless of where they live. Be sure to check out DowneastWatercolors.com to see many more original paintings and my archive, which includes a sampling of pieces in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

Frequently asked questions
What is a giclee print?

Giclee prints are the gold standard for fine art reproductions. Rather than using plates as with lithographs, they use high-resolution digital scans and special archival inks to create incredibly detailed reproductions that look just like the original art. I have just started making giclees of my watercolors, and they match the original paintings perfectly.

How are the paintings / prints packaged?

Unless otherwise noted, original paintings include a double white Crescent Conservation mat, backing board, and clear sleeve. Prints include a single white conservation mat, backing board, and clear sleeve.

I include a label with the painting's title, location, and my contact info. It's a cute package that makes a perfect gift.

Paintings and larger prints are carefully wrapped in bubble wrap before being packed in a box, and small prints are sent in a super strong photo mailer. I'm happy to include a personalized note for gifts, just send me the text and I'll put it on a pretty card.

Framing & Displaying

I use standard sized mats, so you can either buy the frame off the shelf or have your local framer offer expert advice and a vast selection of styles and colors. I recommend using UV glass or plexi for original watercolors, which will help protect your art from the sun's damaging light. I'm glad to give you ideas on sourcing glass and frames.

For prints, it's a matter of buying a frame, washing the glass, and slipping into the frame. No special glazing needed.

Whether you use UV glass or not, art should be displayed away from direct or very bright light to avoid fading.

Copyright Info

The artist (Beth Whitney) retains the copyright for all works of art, and this is not transferred at the point of sale. Images on this site and paintings/prints you purchased may not be reproduced in any way.

Basically, you can't scan or print images of the paintings for cards or framing. If sharing on social media, please credit me and include a link to DowneastWatercolors.com.

Digital Images

Watercolors are notoriously difficult to photograph and present digitally. My paintings have natural colors as you would see in real life because I'm trying to capture the scene accurately. Keep in mind that monitor resolutions greatly vary screen to screen, so colors may look brighter on some monitors than others. The original painting always looks so much better in person than the photos online.
