About

How did a complete technophobe end up running an online business?

I'll be perfectly honest; I never intended to do this as a job. The original plan was to work with animals, which I did for a while, but I ended up in university doing a law degree, and then working for the civil service by accident.

About ten years ago, everything changed for me. I developed serious health problems, which have ended up with my not being able to do what some people would call a 'proper' job any more. I knew I had to work from home, for myself, so had to find something I could do. I had been making jewellery for myself as a hobby for a year or so, and had been asked to make pieces for other people, so thought I'd give it a go for real. It doesn't matter if I have a bad day, because I can work at night if I need to, and I have no boss making me feel guilty for taking time off sick, so it's been quite freeing in some ways.

I haven't mentioned the elephant in the room. While I was perfectly adept at typing, and using Word and Excel, I have always been dodgy where technology is concerned. I can't cope with mobile phones, let alone computer programming; I can't even work the DVD player! So how was I going to build and run a website? I am the person that Eddie Izzard was referring to in his 'Ctrl P print' sketch in the encore for 'Glorious'. Fortunately, a friend came to the rescue and built my site, and is there for me to scream to when I break things. Fortunately Etsy is a boon, as it's so simple.

So here I sit, working away. I'm not working with animals, but I'm still surrounded by them. I'm slave to a rather naughty (under-statement of the year!) Cocker spaniel, a varying number of fancy rats and fish, and the birds in my garden. So, not what I had planned, but not too bad in the end.
