About

Rooted in the Driftless

Rolling hills, native tallgrass prairie, limestone cliffs, and coldwater springs… all were left untouched by glaciers in the Driftless Area of southern Wisconsin. Driftless Jewelry is inspired by the flora, fauna, seasons, and landscape of this unique geologic region.

I love taking something beautiful that I see in nature and creating something permanent, a sort of talisman, that you can carry with you to remember that beautiful thing. Conservation is important to me, and my jewelry is a way of celebrating the Driftless Area and sharing the beauty of this area. It's about appreciating the beauty around you, especially now when it's so easy to pass by without noticing, wrapped up in our technology.

Mostly self-taught, I started making jewelry for my own wedding in 2006 and gradually branched out to making pieces for friends and family. Eventually I realized that moving to Etsy was the natural next step: I love everything about running my shop, from photography to graphic/document design to designing and crafting my jewelry. I run the shop by myself, with the moral support of my husband, Keith, and our two cats, Pip and Fingal. I also work full-time as a technical writer for a software company.

I work primarily with Argentium silver and 14k gold-filled wire, Czech fire-polished glass, semi-precious gems, and seed beads. My design process starts when I notice something in nature: the glossy black of a bird's wing, the sheen of a bright red berry covered in ice, or the pattern of grass in a field. I jot it down in my idea book and begin the search for the right beads. From there it's playing with different color combinations and shapes until I find something that reflects the picture in my mind.

I hope you enjoy this slice of Wisconsin.

I work for a software company by day and make jewelry inspired by nature in my free time. Someday, I dream of building an eco-farmhouse in the country with an orchard, a huge garden, and a couple goats.

Frequently asked questions

Gift wrapping and packaging

All orders are lovingly wrapped in a kraft box with a ribbon and ready for gift-giving. Each piece comes with a small anti-tarnish bag to protect it from dust and scratches.

Sizing details

Most photos are enlarged to show detail. Please refer to the measurements in each listing to determine size and scale.

All earwires (the part of the earring that goes through your ear) are 20 gauge thickness unless otherwise noted. This is a common size that comfortably fits most ears and provides nice durability. If you'd prefer a thinner earwire, just let me know!

Care instructions

I use quality 14k gold-filled and Argentium silver metals that are tarnish-resistant. To protect your jewelry from scratches and dust, I recommend storing it in the small felt bag it arrives in. And follow this old advice: Put your jewelry on last, after makeup and hairspray.

Repairs

I use quality materials that are made to last, and I test every design to ensure that it stands up to regular use. However, I understand that accidents happen and I'm happy to repair any jewelry that I have made. Estimates for repairs are handled on a case-by-case basis. Please contact me before shipping anything and we can discuss the best possible next steps.

Please note: My jewelry is not mass-produced and I buy small quantities of most of my materials. If replacement materials are needed for repairs, I will try to find an exact match if I don't have it in stock, but I can't guarantee that I will be able to do so.

About handmade jewelry

Every piece is made by hand, so you can expect some slight variations from the photos shown in the listing. The unique nature of the materials is one of the reasons I love handmade jewelry. No two pieces are exactly alike!
