Duck Ceramics is an independent pottery studio run by me, Alice Duck. Originally founded in a small attic room in my Bristol flat, I now make and finish each piece by hand in my Brighton studio.
The technique I use is called slip casting. Commercially this process is used, along with machines to reproduce identical copies of one product, churning out hundreads of 'perfect' duplicates. There is something satisfying about imitating the machine - but with the ability to make every product individual. It might be a drunk mug, or a wonky vase, or the lines may not be as straight as they 'should be' but this is why I fell in love with handmade ceramics.
Simplicity and function are at the core of the work I make. I like to re-imagine classic shapes and divert them from their original purpose into a design piece. A camping mug has been transformed into a object of delicate craftsmanship, and it's natural 'mistakes' have been left on show to celebrate the process, just as I believe they should be.

all of life's imperfections are solved inside this cup
My creative life started at the University of the West of England where I studied Fine Art, specializing mainly in photography and film.
Since completing this degree I discovered the world of ceramics, where a hands-on approach to craftsmanship has given me a whole new relationship with the work I make.
I am predominantly self-taught, which I find gives my work a unique, one-of-a-kind character. Throughout my creative career I have always found inspiration from fashion, functionality and other people. My work is designed to make the customer feel warm fuzzy, whether it's because they are giving the piece as a present or because they have had one of those days and are snuggling down with a hot chocolate from their favourite duck ceramics cup.
Antique crockery also plays a key part in the ascetics’ of my work, with the floral decals and design being based on those cups your grandma still keeps on her dresser. Having a quirky modern twist with the wrap around technique and wonky shape keeps any onlooker on their toes!
Working with stoneware and porcelain, I use a variety of methods to bring texture, colour and depth to my work. I imprint the clay with fabric, apply slips and glazes then finish it all off with some decals and lustre.
I'm always really keen to work with customers on personalised items and specifics that they would like. Please feel free to get in touch if you fancy having a chat about anything in particular.

I believe handmade objects should look handmade and embrace their unique qualities. I love simple decoration, organic shapes that show each item was made individually and tableware with a difference. I am self taught which i feel adds a particular charm to my work. As I've never learned what the rules are I'm not afraid to break them
Please feel free to send me a message with any questions you might have. I love doing one off commission pieces for customers whether thats a name, date or anything else you might have in mind.

Returns and exchanges
I spend a lot of time trying to accurately describe and depict all of my items. Please remember that there are variations in monitor displays and that these are all handmade items and vary slightly from one piece to the next. If you are unhappy with your purchase please contact me so we can work together towards a happy experience.
If you would like to return an item, the buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. I will refund you for the cost of the item (not shipping) upon receipt of the returned item(s). If you would like to exchange an item you can return yours and order the piece you would like online.

Shipping
Shipping ceramics is expensive! I am a very small business and unfortunately don't qualify for a discount on shipping. I use recycled materials for shipping as one way of trying to cut down on shipping costs. Like some other shops, I don't make any profit on shipping, the price listed is either the actual cost or even slightly discounted. In case of a significant charge overage I will send a refund.
International customers - Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to purchase.
As you can imagine, I am unable to change your order once it is shipped. Also, because the mail and/or shipping services can sometimes be unreliable, I cannot guarantee delivery times or dates.
If you live in or around London (or here for a visit) you’re more than welcome to stop by my studio and pick your item up when it’s ready. I will let you know when it’s finished and we can coordinate a time for pick-up.
