About

Artist Statement

My name is Cynthia McDowell and I am a full time studio potter in Northwest N.M. I am very passionate about my craft, making and using handmade ceramics.

I have been wood firing my pottery for almost a decade. The traditional art of wood firing pottery can only be learned by experience and spending large quantities of time loading and firing kilns with others. I travel to fire large kilns all over the region and country. This way of producing rustic, one of a kind ceramic surfaces has fascinated me for quite some time. I have a nice studio and wood kiln at home as well.

The Southwest desert landscape, mountains and New Mexico style influence my work. As a result, my pottery is functional, earthy and elegant. I enjoy carving images (fish) into thrown forms and then inlaying slip. I allow the wood kiln atmosphere to do the rest in surface decoration and keep an open mind. This is where my kiln loading and firing experience really help in achieving success.

This year, I began electric firing earthenware in a quiet, contrasting and romantically western style. The brown and white wares are all about showing off the food presentation.

I actively sell my work locally and nationally through fairs, shows, online and in galleries.

Images are taken to the best of my ability, but pottery colors may be slightly different looking in person. Size of pottery is measured on each piece, but may vary slightly based on the nature of the hand made pot.
