The story of how your beautiful new silk came to be.

I fell in love with dyeing over a decade ago, when I painted hot wax over my first batik. The process of slowly building up layers of color, the smell of the beeswax, the crackled texture of the finished fabric…(sigh). I could have happily spent every waking minute in the studio (and many days, I did).

A few years after that first batik, I began struggling with increasing pain and weakness in my arms, resulting in a loss of dexterity. I eventually had to stop batiking as it was too physically challenging, and I began experimenting with other types of fiber art that I could pour my creative energies into. (I've always been a creative type. You'd think with my father being a physicist, I'd be able to pass high school algebra. And I did! Eventually.)

One day, a year or so after I received my Bachelor's Degree in Fiber Art, I happened upon an intriguing method of dyeing. A few yards of muslin and one 5 pound bag of ice later, and I was hooked. With ice dyeing, I could enjoy all the unpredictability, spontaneity, and beauty of batiking without causing undue stress on my arms.

I immediately began experimenting with different types of fabric, and found that silk had a certain quality to it when combined with ice dyeing: it dyed beautifully, with intricate patterns and delicate, iridescent colors. After several years of meticulously testing a wide variety of color combinations and products, I chose and carefully curated the collection you see before you today.

Combined with my loves of ancient history and storytelling, every piece in my silk collection holds special meaning. When you purchase one of my pieces, you support my family and enable me to continue doing what I love. Now, I look forward to walking into my studio in the morning, knowing that I'll be spending the day happily crafting beautiful, one of a kind pieces that are a joy to make and wear. From my home to yours.

Cheers,
Deanna

Care instructions

All of our high quality silks have been treated with soda ash prior to dyeing, which bonds the dye permanently to the fabric. This means you'll receive a beautiful scarf that you can wear for years and years without worrying about fading.

Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent such as baby shampoo. Add several tablespoons of white vinegar to first rinse to revive shine, then rinse again thoroughly in plain water. Never wring out your silk- instead, lay it out on a clean white towel, roll up, and gently press out excess moisture. Line dry habotai silk, and lay silk satin flat to dry. Iron on silk setting while slightly damp. Expect light bleeding in the first several washes.
