Who's on pole? Making things while the cars are on the tele (with a wheaten terrier on my feet)

My family and my Aunties in particular inspired me, growing up, to make things. I loved their gift creations of Fimo, fabric or paper. I love words and images, and am drawn to children's books. "Who's on Pole?" is my second self-pulished book, after "The Roaring River Rally", inspired by my sister Emma Gilmour, and Tulip the monkey, her very special co-driver. Cars are a big part of my life, now and growing up, so they seem to appear in my creations, along with dogs, another important thread. I've made lots of paper and felted dog creations in the past, and have a few under way at the moment. Hopefully you might get to meet them soon.
My book was published with the help of a local printer, DigiArt and Design, in Port Chalmers, just a few kms over the hill from where I live in Waitati. For "Who's on Pole?" I made wood block prints, and white line prints and merged them digitally myself to make the story come to life with text. I had written the text a few years ago, and slowly made the prints to go with the counting rhyme. "Who's on pole?" is a phrase I've heard so many times, when Formula One or Bathurst is on, so that was the initial idea for the story.
All of my other creations on Etsy, paintings and soft sculptures are made solely by me.

  • Monica Graham

    Owner, Creator

Makes dogs. Makes children's stories. Paints, knits, crochets, sews, takes a LOT of photos of her family. Drinks way too much coffee for her size :-)

Production partners

  • Digi@rt and Design, printing service

    Port Chalmers, New Zealand

The small team at Digiart takes a genuine interest in local projects, supporting me in self-publishing my book. Their enthusiasm was invaluable at the critical final phase of actually getting my children's book printed and out there.

It is such a pleasure to make something for somebody else. I am always thrilled when something I have made finds its way to a good home where it will be loved and appreciated.
My inspiration comes from my home and family and I love to make things with a light heart. Often a phrase will pop into my head or a doodle will demand to become a painting or a sculpture. I work in crochet, felt, needle felting and paper pulp for my 3d figures.
It's great fun being able to share my creations.
Thank you for visiting Eddie and Moni.
