Art Degree, Financial Industry Career for 20+ Years Turned into Marrying My favorite fandoms with My Favorite Art Form - Wirework!!

Back when being called a nerd was not quite a compliment, I discovered that I was, hands down, unabashedly, a nerd.

Initially it started with Archie comics when I was about 5. I LOVED reading my Archie comics (I admit, I had a crush on Jughead.). But when my nerdiness really started, I was the tender age of 6 and Star Wars was released for the very first time in 1977. All it took was one viewing before POOF - my walls were covered with Han Solo drawings. My floor was covered with Star Wars comic books and toys. And a lot of my mom's spare time was spent twisting my hair into Princess Leia buns, so I guess I was cosplaying too.

I'd constantly be painting portraits of my favorite Star Wars characters and moments. I even tried painting the Millennium Falcon onto my shirt. While I was still wearing said shirt. Using tempera paint...

Anyhoos, I was always drawn to stories that were mythological, paranormal, sci-fi, good versus evil. And I always ALWAYS had a thing for the anti-hero (hence my Han Solo and Vegeta obsessions.)

I eventually went on to college and obtained a degree in art. Having my son at an early age meant that I had to take whatever full time job came my way - and I accidentally fell into the financial industry for over 20 years.

I needed a creative outlet, so I began painting and making jewelry again. I spent a lot of time giving back to my community through art, such as being the Director of art program at The Hoboken Shelter where I would teach the shelter residents once a week how to paint or do wire work. I'd then curate exhibits for their work at The Hoboken Library where they'd sell their pieces. The absolute pride on my students' faces was indescribable.

Additionally, I became a chairwoman on the board of directors for an artist's group called Hob'Art. We exhibited our work in many galleries in the Northeast. I've also exhibited my work in solo exhibitions and as part of ensemble shows.

It was then that I started experimenting with combining my love of wire work and jewelry design with my love of painting. My paintings became a backdrop for my jewelry designs.

I opened my etsy shop in 2008. It was verrrrry slow. For almost a year. One day I got a custom order request for a matching set of bracelets, I was so floored!! FINALLY! So I dutifully worked on the set and shipped it off, received an amazing review for it, and thought, "Wow! That felt AWESOME!" That was in 2008. I just found out in 2019 that that custom order was my oldest son. He felt so bad for me not having any sales that he used a friend's information to order a gift for his friend. Yep....my son is the best.

In 2013 I was laid off my job at the bank. I knew in my heart I couldn't look for another job in the financial industry. It was affecting my mental health to the point where it was affecting my physical health.

When I got home the day I was laid off, I changed my clothes, sat in front of the TV, and turned on Netflix. Scrolling through umpteen things and not finding a damn thing of interest, a show called Supernatural popped up. "I'll watch an episode and see what this is." Watched the Pilot. Ok, let's see what the next episode is like. Then the next one. And the next one....I was hooked. And INSPIRED. I began creating pieces inspired by characters, by moments, by episodes in general...I couldn't stop!

I then started working at conventions and found that people actually liked my interpretations. Actors from Supernatural even came over to look at my wares and today most of the cast have pieces of mine! Some actors have multiple pieces, which is such a huge honor.

I'm now beginning to rekindle my love of combining painting with jewelry design. My paintings are available in my Ko-fi shop: www.ko-fi.com/eldwennesfantasy.

I also have a lot of my vintage Supernatural designs there AND a BOGO! If you become a subscriber on my ko-fi page you also get great perks in both my ko-fi AND here! Please consider becoming a supporter or subscriber.

And you know what? If you see something you like in my shop - the best compliment ever is to share the link to someone's shop via social media or word of mouth - and it costs nothing to do that!

I am ever so grateful to be doing what I love for a living and it's thanks to amazing customers like you. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it!

Much love,

Jodi
