Making the finest knives possible in a small island workshop

I haven't been without a knife of some kind in my pocket since I was seven.
There's hardly been a time in my life when metalworking wasn't a big part of my daily work.

Working with metals has been a passion since I was a child- from making jewelry out of found objects to silversmithing and stone cutting in my twenties, on to practical welding.
Eventually, my wife's career in public service took off and took her away from our home, and I ended up a full time Dad, on a ridiculously picturesque island in Puget Sound, homeschooling three pre-teen boys.
Blacksmithing became first a hobby, and soon a part time then full time occupation, and my sons grew up helping in the shop.
Bit by bit, my fascination with blades became an avenue for artistic expression and practical products- since I love to cook, I need the best knives available, and have developed patterns that solve the shortfalls I see in commercially available knives.
My blades are made from raw materials, often forged of layered (Damascus) steel that is made on site.

As my skills with grinder, forge, and hand finishing have developed, it became necessary to develop a deep understanding of the chemical and crystalline nature of blade steels. The transformations that take place during forging, cycling hot and cold for strength, and tempering are a constant challenge and fascination.

Every ElementFe blade is 100% made and finished in my shop- the only ready made components are the tiny screws that I use in assembling my folding knives.

Thank you for your interest, please contact me with any requests for information on my process, or ideas for custom work!

My journey in metalworking began when I was a child- I made jewelry from whatever I could find- salvaged copper wire was a favorite! I"m now a full time blacksmith/bladesmith, producing one of a kind kitchen and folding knives in my Island workshop.
