About

It Started as a Tall Tale

The tale became a memory...
The memory became a creative moniker...

When I was very little, there was this ornate little bottle of glitter on a shelf in my grandparents' den. When I asked about it, my grandpa said that he sprinkled it on the lawn to keep the elephants off the plants.

Grandma rolled her eyes and laughed, and said, "There aren't any elephants on the lawn. Rachel, have you seen any elephants?" "No," I agreed. To which Grandpa, wagging his finger in the air excitedly, proclaimed,"See! It's working!"

Grandpa was always one of my biggest creative inspirations and supporters. He was witty, a fantastic storyteller with a knack for mischief and tall tales, and loved photography. He gave me my first camera, and always had a supply of Dr. Sketch pens at the ready.

Since most of my creations are books & paper goods- places to record, explore and share one's story- visually or in writing- it was only fitting that I name my shop after this beloved tall tale.

My greatest hope is that my goods inspire that same sense of whimsy, lightheartedness and good-natured mischief in others.

Welcome to Elephant Dust Handmade! This shop is named after a favorite joke by my late grandfather- who was one of my earliest creative inspirations. All of my items are lovingly handmade, with a sense of childlike imagination, whimsy, sense of humor and nostalgia for days when life was magical. I hope to inspire little departures from the mundane... with just a touch of Elephant Dust.
