Let Us Share Quiet Moments

“May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.” - JRR Tolkien

I treasure quiet moments of reflection. Life has been increasingly hectic, and it can be difficult to find the ideal place to be alone: listening to waves on the shore; a fresh breath of forest; even sunshine on clean linens. Sometimes when we are too occupied with other people, places, and sounds, it can be a challenge to see what is truly important.

A candle is a simple way to create a private space almost anywhere. It helps the mind come to focus, and our sense of smell powerfully evokes mood and memory. I have found peace in my few minutes alone with a tiny flame. Even if you do not keep a formal meditation practice - and I do not - I encourage you to enjoy a few minutes of reflection and the pleasure of a cheerful scent filling the room.

Each of my candles is paired with a concept, such as ENCOURAGEMENT or WISDOM, and a quote to reflect on if you so choose. Details are included in each listing regarding color and scent, and the text is attached to your candle (so it won’t go wondering off).

I hope you enjoy your candles as much as I enjoyed making them for you. Best wishes for your health and happiness!

A little about me…

Several years ago I got sick, and since then it has been a challenge relearning how to live. I trained as a pilot and then as an air traffic controller, and suddenly I was unable to do either. Chronic illness presents many obstacles, not the least of which is a sense of social isolation. People dealing with illness are often surrounded by friends and family who care about them, but who cannot relate to what they are going through. In this way the internet has been a boon, putting strangers across the country (and world) in contact who might otherwise have never found the support they craved.

One of the opportunities I found in my situation was learning to be more compassionate toward myself and others. Joy Selak talks in her book, "You Don't LOOK Sick," about how being ill made her a better person. It was not until I had to deal with a condition nearly invisible to others that I truly began to understand that not all may not be as it seems. People who look normal may be putting a smile on their face to keep up their own optimism - not because all is well. Ill people may not have the ability to participate in normal activities, even while looking “normal” from the outside.

I am grateful to those connections I found with complete strangers - bloggers and authors who have shared their stories. This anonymous empathy has made me feel less alone, and helped me to find comfort and joy in my situation. I would like to pass on that sharing of strength if I can.

My day job is working for the Federal Aviation Administration. I was an air traffic controller for seven years - and I loved going to work every day. Four years ago I got sick, and that struggle has changed the way I view life, work, and friendship.
