It Takes Courage To Grow Up and Become Who You Really Are -e.e. cummings

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” – e.e. cummings

I’ve been a “closet” jewelry artist for years, manipulating metal as a way to escape the chaos of life as a mom, author, and entrepreneur. One day, someone saw one of my pieces and asked where she could buy them. Additional requests followed, and the rest, as they say, is history.

That said, if anyone had suggested even five years ago that at this point in my life I’d have 5 kids, 3 dogs, a studio filled with metal and files and polishing wheels, and designs coming to me in the wee hours of night, I’d have laughed.

Which is why I’m slowly learning that planning is (somewhat) pointless.

I’m passionate about creating pieces and collections that reflect my approach to life: sometimes deep, sometimes snarky, always honest. Recycled and upcycled materials are among my favorites; there’s nothing better, for example, than spying a unique rock lying amidst thousands of others, simply waiting to be noticed, and then featuring it as the focal point of a gorgeous cocktail ring. Each of my pieces is individually handmade, allowing for slight variations in each which only add to the spirit and character of the piece.

Welcome to Elizabeth Lyons Designs!

As a self-taught jewelry designer and metalsmith, I'm constantly waiting for inspiration to strike (at which point I disappear into the studio, for what I'm told by my children sometimes feels like days).

I love to create pieces that have a story behind them --- whether from the music I listen to while crafting it or a quote that inspired it or the way a piece can magically transform itself from what I thought it was supposed to be to what it itself was destined to be.

I frequently oxidize my copper and silver pieces (or portions thereof) in order to give them a worn, character-filled look. Over time, the oxidization will likely wear off in spots, and the shiny copper or silver will shine through. If you would like a piece of your jewelry to be less oxidized in a particular area, you can simply take a polishing cloth with a quality polishing agent (one recommended for sterling silver or copper) and shine it up! And if, over time, the oxidization on your piece wears off to the point that you feel your piece is too shiny, you can contact me and arrange to ship it back to me and I can re-oxidize it for a small fee.

Some people's skin does have a reaction to copper in that the copper leaves a green or black ring on their skin (most often when wearing a copper ring). In fact, if you are highly sensitive to the compounds in copper, your skin may develop this reaction even when you wear sterling silver, which is 7.5% copper. So, this discoloration is not necessarily indicative of cheap jewelry, as its often believed.

Some jewelers seal their jewelry so that their customers with sensitivity to this metal won't be affected. I prefer not to seal my jewelry, as it prevents it from continuing to oxidize (or un-oxidize) over time and takes away some of its character. Certainly, if you know you are prone to reacting to copper, and yet still love to wear copper jewelry, you can seal your piece with a product made especially for sealing copper jewelry.
