This whole process was absolutely perfect. It shipped THE DAY I purchased it and arrived in less than 2 days. The item itself is absolutely gorgeous and so unique. I bought this for my dad who is a huge Star Wars fan and a product of the 1977 Star Wars generation so the nostalgia of this piece moved him to tears. He was blown away by how beautiful and delicate it is. The lighting truly has a magical quality to it that can’t be described without seeing it in person. I had a feeling it would be so perfect that I would want one, too, so I also bought one for myself. Couldn’t be happier — thanks to the artist for everything!

As pretty as these look in the pictures, it's EVEN BETTER in person. They're delicate and beautifully crafted, and they make a fabulous gift.
Handmade Sculptural Lightboxes
At ElliotFanDesign each Sculptural Lightbox is carefully crafted in my home workshop in Kensington, California. Each composition is designed to be enjoyed in both the illuminated "lightbox" state as well as in the more traditional "shadowbox" state, with the LEDs turned off.
These original design paper tunnel-book structures are handmade from laser-cut bristol card stock and the custom box enclosures are created from wood and acrylic pieces cut on my table saw. I use a 65W CO2 laser to cut the paper (all Lightboxes made before 2020 were cut by hand with an Xacto knife - the date is written in the lower right corner of the front most layer of paper)).

Frequently asked questions
How do you create your designs?
Each design begins with a rough pen or pencil sketch. Compositional refinements and cleanup are usually done in Adobe Photoshop but sometimes I stick with paper and pen/pencil. Some of the designs are inspired by places I visit while others are from my imagination or based on popular culture.
Are the paper structures laser cut?
Original prototypes and certain one-offs as well as all pieces produced prior to June 2020 are cut by hand.
Starting in June 2020, I have been cutting my "production" designs on my 65W laser cutter. The paper tunnel book structures are then assembled by hand.
When I connect the 9v battery to my Lightbox, the blue LED turns ON briefly and then goes out. The green (or other colored) LED stays on. Is the blue LED burning out?
Different color LEDs require slightly different voltages to turn ON. As the battery gets used up, its voltage drops, eventually forcing some LEDs to turn OFF sooner than others. Blue LEDs have a higher voltage requirement than many other colors so they will be the first to turn OFF when the battery gets too weak. Replace your 9v battery with a fresh one (alkaline is better, Lithium is best) or use the USB cable and a USB power supply.
How long do the LEDs last?
LEDs last a very long time. After many years of continuous use, LEDs will eventually start to lose their brightness. You can expect an LED to lose about 30% of its brightness after several years of continuous 24/7 use, but this varies with the LED manufacturer. Normal usage of a few hours per day should have the LEDs lasting many, many years. In the rare case that an LED does burn out, contact me for repair.
