Announcement   We are inspired by Door County, Wisconsin, our home. Door County is part of the Niagara Escarpment, a unique geological feature that shapes our daily life. Our shapes, images and glazes reference the lakes, cliffs, forests, beaches, and weather in each piece of functional art we make. We translate these powerful experiences into abstract and universal images that elicit an instant response by the viewer which makes visiting our showroom an interactive experience. A bowl or pitcher may remind you of a certain beach, person or moment, or a certain season, night sky, a concert or meal. A connection is made, the story becomes yours and you know you've found what you were looking for.

"My new mugs arrived safely. I have a fresh brewed cup of coffee setting by my side. They are (a)...gift to myself and I absolutely will adore and pamper them forever. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful creative work with me. Ever a fan and friend, J.R."

We live and work in Ellison Bay Wisconsin which is near the tip of the Door Peninsula..a 'thumb' of land between Green Bay and Lake Michigan. Our studio and gallery and home are housed in a retired fruit barn.
We make functional (food, microwave, oven and dishwasher safe) pottery. Each pot, mug, vase, bowl etc is one of a kind, so the photos are only a representation of what can and does happen in our studio.
We also make decorative pottery using an ancient process that is called pit firing. It's a fast wood firing which leaves unique and random patterns of color on the surface.

Our daughter absolutely loved her Christmas present. The hand crafted baking dish was beautifully designed and exquisitely made. The owners sent a personal note with their pottery and a few sweet treats for Christmas. The very best experience. Thank you.

About

Making Pottery and Selling it is a Way of Life For Us

In the fall of 1974, John Dietrich found an empty apple packing barn in Ellison Bay, Door County, Wisconsin and knew it would be his studio, gallery and home as soon as he walked inside. It was everything he had ever wanted.
He wanted to have the life of a studio potter: making his own tools, clay, glazes and pots from beginning to end. Then meeting and selling to his customers day after day.
He was successful in achieving his goal to make beautiful pottery for people who would share their love of his work with their family and friends.
John married Diane McNeil in 1994. She brought four children to the marriage and a fresh point of view to the studio and gallery.
Their partnership has resulted in some collaborative work as well as experimenting with pit firing, pit firing classes, and demonstrations for groups.
John continues to create new glazes, develop new shapes and products and push the clay as far as it can go as he develops a new body of work. Diane has many projects in the studio which compete with her running their business, both in their gallery and online.

Thank you for stopping by. We've been making pottery here in Ellison Bay WI since 1974 and our one goal is to make you, the user, happy with your new pottery. To that end we focus on the user experience. We make sure the handles fit, the pots are balanced, and the foot is smooth. We go into the studio with one goal in mind: To make beautiful pottery that will enrich your life.
John studied pottery at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI and UW-Oshkosh in Oshkosh, WI in the masters degree program before he became Master Potter Abe Cohn's assistant for six years. He then bought the apple barn and transformed it into Ellison Bay Pottery where he's been working ever since.
Diane McNeil and John married in 1994. Diane has been a bead artist and author in addition to her passion for handbuilding clay. She also manages the gallery and online business.
