About

Other times and places...

I love things that transport me to another time and place, whether they are stories, pictures, songs, objects or things to wear. Hats have a peculiar ability to do this and to express something of a person's own story.

I have loved hats my whole life but lived overseas in a place where I couldn't come by them often. When I moved to the States, the collection began and my favorite hats always seemed to come from antique stores.

I learned to sew as a child on an antique Singer sewing machine with a treadle. I didn't realize how rare and valuable an experience I was having in both using this amazing machine and in being taught to sew by my mother. Sadly, I have met very few people who have had this kind of opportunity in their youth.

I learned woodworking from my father as well. And so, in the last few years, hat blocking has been calling to me and since great hat blocks are so hard to come by in the US, I decided to make my own. So some of my hats are blocked on my own hat blocks.

I also have another Etsy shop called Papuan Lass, where I sell miniature scroll Christmas ornaments. This is where I developed some skill in paper sculpting which you will see incorporated in some of my hats.

All my hats are designed and handmade by me. I have no formal training in millinery but have been studying it and teaching myself by trial and error over the last few years.

I was born and raised in the tropics, far away from all things millinery. I love the stories hats tell and I love to work with my hands. So now, amongst many other things, I tinker at the art of making hats.

Shipping
I ship using the least expensive shipping method, which is often USPS. Tracking numbers can sometimes be provided but USPS does not provide tracking outside the US. If you specifically request express shipping or an arrival deadline, message me with a request and I can either create a custom listing for you or send you an additional PayPal invoice for the difference in shipping costs. Note that expedited shipping through USPS to a country outside the US, ensures that the parcel will be shipped to your country and expedited through customs. USPS has no control over the speed with which the parcel is then delivered by the postal systems of countries outside the US.
Refunds and Exchanges
A refund is negotiable for any purchase within 2 weeks of hat purchase, if your hat is not as described in the original listing. Message me first to describe your situation and we can arrange for you to ship the item (at your cost) back to me, unworn, in new condition, in its original packaging and I will refund your purchase price upon receipt of the undamaged item. If the hat was damaged in transit, message me with an explanation and request.
With the exception of custom made hats, if you received your hat and have decided that you don't want it anymore, ship the item (at your cost) back to me within 2 weeks of purchase, unworn, in new condition, in its original packaging and I will refund your purchase price minus $10 upon receipt of the undamaged item. Custom hat orders may not be returned for refund unless an agreement has been reached prior to return. A custom hat is a unique design, made especially for the customer.
If you need to exchange it for a different size or color, there will be a $10 charge for the exchange as well as a shipping charge for the new hat to be shipped (usually $10 for USA and up to $20 for international). Ship the item (at your cost) back to me within 2 weeks of purchase, unworn, in new condition, in its original packaging.
I do not issue refunds for digital listings in most cases. One exception is if you have purchased multiple quantities of the same digital listing (hat style) by mistake. Message me with your situation.
