Finding joy in the simple life
So many things change when you have children. There are the obvious changes and then there are the unexpected changes.
Over the past 6 years, we have slowly begun to yearn for a simpler, more natural, more handmade way of life.
It began when I saw that my little guy had inherited his momma's eczema. In the past, I had slathered the pharmaceuticals on myself, the eczema abated for a while only to come back in full force later. I couldn't bring myself to put the drugs on my small child especially since they never seemed to truly help much anyway.
So I started searching for a healthier alternative. I had intended to find a more natural treatment for the eczema that we would just have to live with but then I learned about handmade soap.
I could make a product for my family that did not have chemicals and detergents added to them. I could give them a natural cleanser that would moisturize their skin and help it feel better!
What began as tentative baby steps turned into a huge passion for making soap and shampoo bars. These products don't strip the natural oils from your skin, scalp and hair. Many detergent based bath bars and shampoos leave your skin defenseless, causing it to go into overdrive producing oil to try to balance itself out. This leads to more scrubbing and buying more products to continually moisturize your stripped-bare skin and hair.
Since switching to handmade soaps without detergents, neither my son nor I have had an eczema outbreak. Granted, our skin problem was not severe and there is definitely a time and a place for medicine but I love that we are not dependent on it anymore.
By using more natural ingredients we have been able to help our bodies help themselves. The momma in me loves that.

As a military wife, I thought my dreams of a homestead would have to wait until we retired. Then I realized, we could make any place our homestead just by the way we choose to live. We choose to find joy in the simple life - no matter where we are.
Emily's Homestead is a small home-based business out of Independence, MO that handcrafts soaps, shampoo bars, deodorants, lip balms & lotions. My soaps and products are made from scratch using natural oils and ingredients. When I fell in love with soap making, it went hand in hand with a passion to create products that are as natural and as good for our bodies as possible. What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put in them!
I will always list the ingredients that go into my products so you know exactly what you are using and the quality of the products. All of my soaps and shampoo bars are made through the cold-process method.

SOAPS/SHAMPOOS: My soaps are handmade from scratch and have many benefits that you cannot find in commercial soaps. It is suggested that soap be used within approximately a year. To encourage the longest soap life it's best to keep them away from water when not being used. Placing soaps on a soap dish with good drainage can also help keep your soap drier and hard.
D EODORANT, LIP BALM, & LOTION BARS: Keep out of sun or direct heat for any prolonged amounts of time as this can cause melting and possible leaking. I recommend using these products within a year from purchase date.
DISCLAIMER: Variety in Products: I will always do my VERY best to keep my recipes as close to the last made batch (unless improved) as possible. But with that said, I cannot guarantee that your soap bar/product will be COMPLETELY the same as the last. It is, after all, homemade. Colors, textures, and scents may slightly vary from batch to batch. I will always include an ingredient list and description of each product. Please read carefully before purchasing and be aware of any ingredients ahead of time that may cause allergic reactions.
ALLERGIES: CAUTION: If you have any allergies, please make sure to read all the ingredients used in each product. Some oils are derived from nuts and should be avoided by those with severe nut allergies. If you are pregnant or nursing use with caution and consult with a doctor if unsure about certain ingredients (such as certain essential oils). The same should be considered if you are concerned with infants and young children (eucalyptus & wintergreen are some oils you should avoid with young children). If you are unsure about any product, please contact your health care provider for more information. If a rash or irritation occurs, DISCONTINUE USE IMMEDIATELY. (If you are allergic to a certain essential oil and are concerned about it being in your soap or about anything, please don’t hesitate to ask me. I’d be happy to share my fragrance blends when requested.) I make no medical or therapeutic claims about my products. My products are all natural and as a result they will expire more quickly than commercial products. Information on the qualities of certain oils and other ingredients are based upon information obtained from suppliers, industry data, and from other experienced and knowledgeable soap crafters. Again if you have any questions about a particular product or ingredient, feel free to contact me and I'll be happy to explain.
