Thank you for your interest in my work! I started making jewelry for myself because I love big jewelry, but can't wear heavy earrings. All of my pieces are very lightweight and comfortable to wear all day.
My designs are originally hand-drawn and hand-cut. I draw inspiration from antique lace and ornamental ironwork, from art nouveau and art deco patterns. I am interested in creating beautiful silhouettes and lines, and many of my designs are layered pieces that create dynamic movement when worn.
My jewelry pieces are cut from thin sheets of stainless steel with an industrial water-jet cutting machine. I cut out the finer details with a jeweler's saw and finish each piece by hand, giving it a brushed satin surface. The stainless steel allows me to create delicate yet bold pieces that are lightweight, and very strong.
The ear-wires are handmade from sterling silver wire and the pendants hang from a sterling silver jump-ring on a stainless steel cable with a bayonet clasp. The stainless steel does not tarnish - simply rub the piece with a soft cloth if it ever needs cleaning.

In addition to making jewelry, I also teach evening classes and work at a little art college in Portland, Oregon: http://www.ocac.edu. I also make larger metalwork, mostly out of copper. You can see examples here: http://www.mielmargarita.com

A word about eco-friendliness: all stainless steel is generally made up of 60-80% recycled stainless steel and is in turn 100% recyclable (source: The Stainless Steel Information Center - http://www.ssina.com/faq/index.html). In my studio I save all of my metal (steel and sterling silver and anything else) scraps for recycling, I use only washable hand towels instead of paper towels and I use natural solutions for pickling and patination instead of harsh chemicals. Thank you, I'm getting off my soapbox now.
