Once upon a time...

Fine art, calligraphy, and jewellery design.

Hi, I'm Emma, the artist and designer behind Emsawhatsy. Obsessed with curly lines, intricate patterns, and lots of colour; inspired by Tasmanian landscape and Scandinavian design. I occasionally come off a bit 'mad scientist' due to a slightly whacky sense of humour and an alternate life as a biomedical science student. Here is my Etsy story.

Once upon a time... there was a girl who really liked to make things, all kinds of pretty things. 'Art and craft' were her middle names, you might say, and she cultivated a love for things like calligraphy and painting from a young age, drooling over illuminated manuscripts like other adolescent girls pore the pages of glossy teenage magazines. However, our young protagonist was also fairly into academic pursuits, such as biology and chemistry (but no physics, please, and advanced maths just made her head ache with frustration), and when the time came to decide on a career path, Medical Science was deemed desirable. A couple of years of study in this direction, and the prospect of a gap year as a nanny in Sweden seemed like a welcome retreat.

As the girl embarked on her new adventure, she anticipated nights without looming assignments and exams, days free to indulge the creative flights of fancy that so often had become a guilty pleasure. And indeed, much creativeness ensued; many paintings (and plates, and candles, and t-shirts) were painted and much calligraphy was, um, calligraphied. During this arty frenzy, the girl discovered that you can make earrings out of fimo! and people like them! And OBVIOUSLY, you must therefore make oodles of the stuff to sell to the populations of the world! (- please note sarcasm in the last three sentences.)

....What the girl didn't realise was that every woman and her chihuahua were already doing this, so while she had a lot of fun working with a new medium, designing and making lots of pretty things, these pretty things needed homes. And homes for jewelleries? Are best found by social networking! A thing about which the girl had much to learn.

Slowly the girl familiarised herself with the strange new world of the internets, and built a small following for her little jewelleries. But her heart yearned for the world of painting and calligraphy. So she decided to meld the two, and the Emsawhatsy Etsy shop is a place where a place where paintings and prints and drawings and calligraphies can gather to find new homes in the wide wide world.

Will they live happily ever after? You decide ♥
