Coefficient of expansion range: 258-360 cubic expansion
Most enamels are available in various mesh sizes such as the standard siftable 80 mesh and 6/20 lump. Be sure to make your selection from our pull-down menu below.
Mesh size is an indicator of glass particle size. The mesh number indicates the number of openings in a linear inch in a standard wire mesh screen. 80 Mesh would be 80 openings per linear inch. 6 Mesh would be six openings per linear inch. A double mesh number such as 80/200 describes the glass particle sizes which pass through an 80 mesh screen, but stay on top of a 200 mesh screen.

47,000 sales and counting - more than THREE TIMES our leading competitor! It’s no wonder that we are the second largest Thompson Enamel distributor under Rio Grande Jewelry Supply! Here’s just one of the reasons why (from a recent customer):
SAVE on enamels AND get the best customer service anywhere! We never charge more than Thompson Enamel prices & always sell in the same sizes as Thompson - 2 oz & 8 oz. We never resize our product to confuse the buyer about price per ounce!
Do the math! SAVE by buying larger quantities. Example - Orient Red - 8 ounce for $44.40 ($5.55 per ounce), 2 oz for $14.80 ($7.40 per ounce) (prices may have changed due to increases from the manufacturer).
We ship within four business days - Orders are processed on Monday and Thursday and are shipped the following business day. Enamel Warehouse is praised by our customers for our fast shipping & friendly customer service!
FYI - The following numbers are 80 mesh only - 2240, 2330, 2720, 2740, 2745, 2747, 2755, 2845, 2061, 2600. Thompson does not manufacture these in the 6/20 or other mesh sizes.
You can also go to the Ganoksin Web Site for the exact same set of instructions -
https://www.ganoksin.com/article/mix-industrial-liquid-enamels/
and read all about the proper handling/mixing of the liquid enamel.
Note - Liquid enamel settles quickly in its liquid suspension and needs to be stirred frequently. After a few weeks, you may find a hard sediment at the bottom of the jar. Simply poke holes in the thickened enamel, let it set for a while, and mix as it liquefies.
Hooray!!! I am now stocked everyday the most popular individual enamels in 2 ounce and 8 ounce IN ALL 169 THOMPSON ENAMEL COLORS.
Introducing my worthy shipping assistants, Vanessa and Kay - They are both AWESOME, by the way! The three of us are dedicated to giving you the very best shopping experience possible! We package orders every Monday and Thursday and ship Tuesday and Friday except on major holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving.

*****ENAMELING FACTS & ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS*****
If you look at the color chart for the transparent enamels (available on any of the individual transparent enamel listings as an added photo), look at the lower left to the four-block color chart. the bottom right is an idea of what enamel looks like if applied directly to copper. Many of the colors are dark and muddy-looking because of the interaction with the copper oxides. That's why most of these transparents are fired on a clear or a white because the oxides are blocked/absorbed in that layer. The only transparents that might be good directly on copper are those that look brighter in the lower right corner of the individual enamel blocks such as Peppermint, Cascade, or Harold Purple.
INFO about the clear (flux enamels) - Inquiring minds want to know!
What are the differences of Thompson’s transparent clear enamel (sometimes referred to as “flux”)?
2008 – A low expansion clear used as the base coat for the crackle technique when Liquid Form-Water Base enamels are used for the second coat. 2008 is also good as a cover coat when working on titanium white steel panels.
2009 – This soft fusing clear will clear up on copper on the first firing. It may produce “break up” or “pull through” when a subsequent coat of enamel is fired high.
2010 – This soft fusing clear will clear up on copper on the first firing but requires more time and/or temperature than 2009. It may produce “break up” or “pull through” when a subsequent coat of enamel is fired high.
2015 – This medium fusing clear has a gold color similar to Thompson lead bearing 1005 or 426. It works well under warm colors.
2020 – This clear does not “yellow” on silver. It should always be used when a clear enamel is needed on silver as the first coat. It may also be used on copper and gold. It is also the clear transparent that is suggested to be used as a final cover coat in that is has a lower expansion than most of the other transparent clears.
2030 – This clear is the best all-purpose-use clear. It works well under other enamels, opaques and transparents. Fire sufficiently to dissolve all copper oxide (reddish-brown color). One or two re-firings may be required.
2040 – This clear is harder than the above transparent clears. It is least likely to develop “pull through” when applying subsequent applications of enamel. It should be fired sufficiently to dissolve all copper oxide.
According to the Thompson catalog for the 1000/2000 series, "Normal Firing Range - 1400-1500 F; Coefficient of Expansion Range - 258 - 360 cubic expansion."
104 is Moretti glass also called "effetre" - 9000 series to be used on glass but CAN also be used on copper. 5000 6000 series for window glass only and stainless. Call Thompson and talk to Tom Ellis to get more specific information.
QUESTION - WHAT COLORS SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Colors are personal and help define your unique artist's voice. I would start with colors that pop out at you when you look at a color chart. Practice & keep notes. There can be a lot of variation when you consider different kilns or torches, firing times, temps, etc. PLAY with them and enjoy the outcome! (...and keep notes!)
QUESTION - WHY ARE THERE FOUR COLOR BLOCKS IN THE COLOR CHART FOR TRANSPARENT ENAMELS? DO I GET ALL FOUR COLORS?
Notice that each transparent color on the chart has 4 blocks - one if fired directly on copper, one over clear flux (usually 2030), one over silver, and one over white. Since you can see through the enamel to the surface below, the underlying material or color will affect the enamel. You get one color of enamel that fires differently over different surfaces. Also, be sure to fire long enough to "clarify" the powdered transparent glass. Practice & keep notes!
QUESTION - CAN YOU USE THE ENAMEL FOR GLASS (effetre) ON METAL AND VISE VERSA?
Enamel for soft glass 104 Effetre falls in the same COE range as metals. So you can use them on metal. However the reverse is not true. You can't use the enamels for metals on glass.
There are more color choices for metals.
Instructions for using liquid enamels - search Ganoksin liquid enamel or http://www.ganoksin.com/borisat/nenam/liquid-enamels.htm
LIQUID ENAMEL - FYI - There are 23 different liquid enamels. A couple of them are ground coat base enamels for steel and the rest of them can be divided into two different categories - polymer-based and clay-based. The polymer-based liquid enamels have nine different colors and the rest are all clay-based. A lot depends on what you want to do with them. An 8 ounce bag of the powder form liquid enamel in any of the colors costs about &28. I recommend getting the clay-based ones because they have the most variety in color, and I also recommend getting the dry form liquid enamel and then learning to mix it properly. To learn how to mix it properly you should go to the Ganoksin website and search liquid enamel. There you will find exact instructions.

WHAT IS MESH SIZE?
Medium Temperature - Medium Expansion Enamels for Copper, Gold, Silver, Low Carbon Steel & Metal Clay - 2oz jar
Normal firing temperature range: 1400-1500ºF
Coefficient of expansion range: 258-360 cubic expansion
Mesh size is an indicator of glass particle size. The mesh number indicates the number of openings in a linear inch in a standard wire mesh screen. 80 Mesh would be 80 openings per linear inch. 6 Mesh would be six openings per linear inch. A double mesh number such as 80/200 describes the glass particle sizes which pass through an 80 mesh screen, but stay on top of a 200 mesh screen.
80 Mesh enamel is the standard mesh size that Thompson sells. It is the mesh size used for most enameling procedures. It is glass that has been ground to a particle size slightly finer than "granular sugar".
6/20 Mesh enamels are particles that have an average diameter of about 1/16" to 1/8". This particle size is ideal for bead making on copper tubing, fired with a torch.
100 Mesh is particles that will pass through a standard 100 mesh wire screen (100 openings per linear inch). This mesh size is slightly finer than 80 mesh.
150 Mesh is particles that will pass through a standard 150 mesh wire screen (150 openings per linear inch). This mesh size is finer than 100 mesh.
200 Mesh is particles that will pass through a standard 200 mesh wire screen (200 openings per linear inch). This mesh size is finer than 150 mesh.
325 Mesh is particles that will pass through a standard 325 mesh wire screen (325 openings per linear inch). This mesh size is finer than 200 mesh and resembles "flour" in particle size.
INFO ABOUT THE LIQUID ENAMELS:
This is standard information, but as with most things, many variations exist with the process and individual using it.
LIQUID FORM ENAMEL, WATER BASED (BC 1070, BC 303, GC 16,
+ colors 533, 767, 935, etc.)
1. Those developed for specific applications – spraying, dipping, pouring
2. Traditionally used in industry.
3. BC 969 as a base breaks up a little bit under colors.
4. 303 is a harder glass and less likely to break up under colors. It can be used as a counter enamel when torch firing.
5. The LCE liquid form enamels are meant to go on as base coats as the first application of glass on copper with other colors to go on top.
For instance, reds go dark directly on copper, but with the base coat, they keep their intended color.
6. 1070 is a milky white and can be used as a base coat.
7. GC16 or RM 27 - "ground coat" used on low carbon steel as a base coat. John Killmaster & Alisa Looney prefer the RM27.
8. 533 (titanium) not meant to be as a base coat due to its low expansion. It is great for sgraffito applications.
LCE OR LIQUID COUNTER ENAMEL – LCE 1, LCE 2, etc.
1. Original intenion was to coat both sides for 1st firing and eliminate pickling and minimize warping.
2. Originally developed as a liquid counter enamel (LCE).
3. Good for a counter with regular enamels on top.
4. No clay in these. They have polymer – sticky & dries hard
5. They are good for brushing.
6 Tom – Likes to sift a very light 80 mesh into wet LCE (personal pref) - too much will cause build-up and 80 mesh will fall off b/c nothing to hold in place.
7. The LCE's are not necessarily best for painting.

SEPARATION ENAMEL Info - http://www.glass-on-metal.com/pastart/separation.htm
Separation enamel affects the enamel layers UNDER it. It is best applied with a transparent layer directly UNDER it and changes the viscosity of the transparent layer. Separation enamel does not actually contain enamel. It is sold in a dry form and a liquid form.
CRACKLE ENAMEL Info - There are three crackle enamels in the 80 mesh enamels - 1006 - Crackle White, 2008, Crackle Clear, 1997, Crackle Black. These enamels affect the layers on TOP of them. They create a cellular crackling effect in both transparent and opaque enamels. The more crackle you use, the greater the crackling effect. Crackle enamels work best on domed surfaces because gravity helps in the movement of the hot liquid enamel.
********WHY ARE THERE SHIPPING OVER-CHARGES???*********
We all have experienced sellers who actually make money on shipping fees.
I am not one of them.
I always ALWAYS refund shipping/handling over charges for my customers :-)
Here's why there are shipping overages in the first place:
Because any one item, even something as lightweight as a three-point trivet or small sifter, would cost a minimum of $1.69 to send individually, each item has to be priced by the seller as if it is being shipped alone. If only that item was ordered, then the stated shipping would cover the shipping/handling. When several items are ordered, then the total shipping will be more than necessary and a refund is required. Here' how it works - A large order may be calculated by Etsy as costing $28.00. I get the order, decide that everything can be shipped in a medium or large flat rate box, for example, then refund the excess shipping cost to you through your payment method.
NOTICE ~ I am all about customer service! Most of my orders are shipped in 1 to 3 working days. Exceptions are holidays and larger orders.

I am also meticulous about purity of the product!

INFORMATION - From Art Jewelry Magazine:
What is enameling?
Simply put, enameling is fusing glass to metal. Enamels are made of finely powdered glass particles and other materials, like minerals and ceramic pigments. Enamels come in lump, powder, and liquid forms.
*****************************************************************************************
***Mini glossary***
Coefficient of Expansion (COE) ~ The rate at which a material expands and contracts; enamelists must consider the COEs of both the metal and the glass that they're firing together to ensure that the enamels adhere properly
Counter enamel ~ Enamel fused to the back of a piece to balance the stress created by enamel fired on the front of the piece; prevents cracking
Fines ~ Porcelain dust residue; it's important to wash the fines out of transparent enamels, or the fired colors will be cloudy
Flux ~ A colorless, clear enamel often used as a base layer for subsequent layers of transparent enamels; enamel flux is unrelated to the flux used in soldering
Fully fused ~ A fired enamel surface that is even and glossy
Fusing formula Enamels are manufactured in soft-, medium-, and hard-fusing formulas that correspond to the COEs of various metals; for example, medium temperature/medium expansion enamels are formulated for fine silver, gold, and copper
Holding agent ~ An organic binder that helps adhere enamel powder to metal; Klyr-Fire is a common holding agent that is water soluble and is typically applied with a brush or diluted with distilled water and applied as a spray
Mesh ~ A number indicating the coarseness of the particles in powdered enamels; low mesh numbers are coarser than high mesh numbers
Opaque ~ Colors that are not transparent; it is not necessary to wash opaque enamels before using them
Orange peel ~ A surface finish that occurs as enamel softens during firing and begins to fuse, creating a texture that resembles the skin of an orange
Sugar coat ~ The texture of the enamel within the first minute of firing before the glass softens
Transparent Enamel colors can add visual depth to a piece
Enamel Safety Basics
When you're working with enamels:
• Wear a dust mask.
• Do not touch your eyes, nose, mouth, or other sensitive areas.
• Wear fire-retardant gloves or mitts when loading and unloading the kiln.
• Follow the manufacturer's instructions for operating your kiln.
• When using a fiberglass brush, brush enameled surfaces underwater and avoid skin contact.
• Use an alundum stone underwater.
• Consult your local hazardous waste center for proper glass-disposal methods.
*****INFO ABOUT LIQUID ENAMELS*****
QUESTION - What do you find to be the differences between the two types of liquid enamels: the (LCE) brushable and the (LFE) Liquid Form Water Base?
I had a long chat with Tom Ellis from Thompson Enamel about liquid enamels.
Tom says this is the standard information, but as with most things, many variations exist with the process and individual using it.
****LIQUID FORM ENAMEL (LCE) WATER BASED
These are BC 1070, BC 303, GC 16 and colors like 533 white, 935 robin egg blue, etc. These all have multiple numbers in their names.
1. Liquid enamels were originally developed for specific applications – spraying, dipping, and pouring. Other applications have also been used by enamelists in the quest for new enameling applications.
2. These were originally used in industry.
3. BC 969 (low fusing clear) as a base breaks up a little bit under colors.
4. BC 303 (medium fusing clear) is a harder glass and less likely to break up under colors.
5. These were originally meant to go on as base coats as the first application of glass on copper with other colors to go on top.
For instance, reds go dark directly on copper, but with the base coat, they keep their intended color.
6. 1070 (medium fusing white) is a milky white and can be used as a base coat.
7. GC16 (ground coat for steel) is used on low carbon steel as a base coat to prepare the surface for enameling. Otherwise, the enamel will not bond.
8. 533 (titanium white) not meant to be as a base coat due to its low expansion.
9. Not necessarily best for painting because it contains clay.
****LCE OR LIQUID COUNTER ENAMEL –
LCE 1 black, LCE 2 semi-clear, LCE 3 white, LCE 4 green, LCE 5 red, LCE 6 brown, LCE 7 blue, LCE 8 yellow, LCE 9 orange.
1. Original intention was to coat both sides for 1st firing and eliminate pickling and minimize warping.
2. Originally developed as a liquid counter enamel.
3. Good for a counter with regular enamels on top.
4. No clay in these. They have polymer – sticky & dries hard
5. They are good for brushing.
6 Tom – Likes to sift a very light 80 mesh into wet LCE (personal preference) - too much will cause build-up and 80 mesh will fall off b/c nothing to hold in place.
