About

Use it up, wear it out.

For most of my childhood and adolescence, I volunteered at a local historical museum and library. I worked my way through college at several vintage clothing and consignment shops. I've always felt more at home surrounded by old things; things that have been used by others before me; things with stories. Besides the fact that items are no longer made as well as they were in the past, vintage items just seem more three-dimensional to me.

Growing up in Central PA, I was surrounded by many "old Dutchmen" who never threw anything away. There was always a use for it somewhere. Rarely were antique things viewed as precious. My dad, for years, used a hoe made from a recycled buggy spring that he'd picked up at an auction. We butcher pigs with our neighbors every Thanksgiving using equipment that's over 150 years old. "Living history" tends to be the M.O. of these people.

I started off making shrinky-dink jewelry to amuse myself at craft parties, and one day my mom gave me a bunch of vintage buttons and antique skeleton keys to "make something cool." I started experimenting with arranging combinations - so many buttons are made with great backing materials like bone, glass, metal and mother of pearl! I felt it would be a shame for these neat old buttons to keep wasting away in my old tins, so I started assembling rings, and later pendants and brooches. I nearly sold out at craft shows, so I took that as a happy sign to keep on going. I sell my jewelry at boutiques, craft shows, and flea markets.

The materials I do purchase or trade, such as cameos, settings, cabochons, and shipping supplies, are almost all from fellow Etsy sellers, because I feel it's important to help out my fellow indie salespeople. The buttons I use are from flea markets and antique shops. I've met a lot of delightful people on Etsy this way.

All in all, it's a lot of hard work, but I really do enjoy the process of creating jewelry and home decor, and meeting new people. Etsy is the best kind of free market.
