"I can't wait to get my period!"

My first crafting experience came at 8 years old. My friends and I decided to sell friendship bracelets at a local craft fair in Louisville, Kentucky. We had a hard time getting enough inventory, though. So many tiny knots to tie! We made some sales, mostly out of pity, I imagine.

When I was in college in 2003, I had an opportunity to do an internship with some crafters in southern Oregon, and I jumped on it. The Hat People, my hosts, have been my mentors and erstwhile friends ever since. As an Environmental Studies major I was very interested in the small changes we can make in our everyday lives to make the world a better place. So when I saw some cloth pads for sale in the local health food store, I asked Carol, the head Hat Maker, if I should get some. They were about $18 each and looked like oatmeal colored rags. Carol said "Annie Rose, I've got flannel and towels at home, why don't we just make some?" And so we did.

The first Moonpads were made out of scraps I salvaged from Carol's unused and leftover diaper making supplies. I sold them at craft fairs and they fastened with a safety pin. A safety pin! Ouch! I wanted to make pads that were affordable and accessible to people who wanted to try something that was kind of a new idea for them. I was a poor college student, and I didn't have many $18 bills lying around for experiments. But more importantly, I wanted to make pads that were BEAUTIFUL, that gave women a chance to celebrate themselves and their beautiful bodies. I loved talking to people at craft fairs, because I felt that just saying the words "menstrual cycle" out loud, in public, did something to erase the shame and taboo that is ridiculously swirled around women's bodies. That's why I love convos on Etsy. We need to talk about our cycles, so we can take the best care of ourselves.

Moonpads grew from there. I discovered Cowgirl Snaps, and a less perilous way to fasten Moonpads. I found organic cotton flannel, and learned how to dye it professionally and safely. I started packaging Moonpads and selling them wholesale to health food stores.

And then in 2005, a friend of mine said "Hey, there's this new website for people to sell hand crafted items. It's called Etsy. You should check it out." So I did (I was the 1,411th person to get an Etsy shop!) and I put up a few listings, not thinking anything much would come of it. Much to my surprise, I got a few sales. And then I figured out how to connect Paypal and all of a sudden, I couldn't fill all my orders!

I eventually moved my studio out of my house and into a studio space, and hired some helpers to assist with production. Rebecca has been sewing with me for 8 years (we like to joke that it's the longest relationship either of us has had) and we've been through a lot together. Tracy is the Studio Manager, wrangling all the operations. All Moonpads are made by hand, by us, in our studio. It's an amazing joy to be able to not only support the women using Moonpads, but to financially support three women in an atmosphere that is flexible, comfortable, and caring. I am so grateful to be able to do what I do.

The best thing of all is when I hear those words in the title: "I can't wait to get my period!" That's when I know I've brought joy to the world and helped another woman celebrate who she is.

Welcome to Green Betty! Where sustainability and fun collide! This is the home of Moonpads, Reusable Menstrual Pads.

{ Philosophy }

My goal is to create reusable menstrual pads that are easy to use, affordable, and, perhaps most importantly, beautiful and fun. Sustainability isn't just better for the planet, in my world, it's a lot more fun! and i want to enable women to share this experience by providing menstrual pads that are beautiful. My favorite words are "I can't wait for my period! Then I can use Moonpads!" This is why I hand dye all of the organic cotton bodies of Moonpads- oatmeal white is a lovely color, but I wanted more variety.

{ Absorbencies }

Pantyliner and Mini Pantyliner- super light days, or every day wear

Day Pad- medium flow

Extra Absorbent- heavy days

Over Night Pad- medium heavy days, overnight

Over Night Extra/ Postpartum Pads- Heavy flow, overnight

{ Why Use Reusables? }

Moonpads reusable menstrual pads are a great way to go green and have a more comfortable period. They're better for the planet, they're better for your health, and they're WAY more comfortable than disposables! They're easy to use and easy to wash. And they'll also save you money!

{ How to... }

Simply place Moonpad in your underwear and fasten flaps together underneath with the Cowgirl Snap. When you're finished using it, rinse it out and hang to dry until the next time you do wash. They're machine washable and dryer friendly! Detailed washing instructions included with order.

{ Material Sources }

All organic cotton used has been grown and milled in the United States by union workers. This is incredibly local for fabric of any kind- most is grown and or milled in turkey, india or china. Having fabric that's from the US saves a huge amount of fuel. Also, working conditions for most fabric is usually unknown. It's REALLY exciting to be able to provide such an eco-friendly and worker friendly product. With the environment in mind, unbleached fabrics are used whenever possible!

{ Love & Questions }
All Moonpads are made with love. My hope and dream is to provide women with a beautiful product they can look forward to using! I also aim to help break down some of the taboos around menstruation- feel free to send me a convo with any question you might have about Moonpads or menstruation, and I'll be happy to help if I can.

all that being said about how difficult it is for me to do really detailed custom ordes, i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear about what would make Moonpads better for you though!
