Well built bag. Fun and spunky to carry my laptop and a couple of notebooks up to my favorite cafe :)

Finding My Niche as an "Upcycler"

I started my shop in April of 2012 after returning from five months in Antarctica, and two months in New Zealand and Australia. Desperately missing my sewing machine, I sat down and turned 7 months of pent-up creative energy into 3 lap quilts in less than a week. That's where it all began.

However, my quilts didn't sell. I displayed them in the local coffee shop, and received lots of complements. But they still didn't sell. Turns out, about nine billion people sell quilts on Etsy, and the market was over saturated with products just like mine.

Exhausted from my week of creative binging, I donated my quilts to a children's foster program and turned to something smaller-scale and more familiar. Pajama pants. I started making my own pajamas at 15, when store-bought pants were going to waste after notoriously shrinking in the wash. This also helped me avoid shopping from stores that made their products overseas with unfair wages and poor working conditions. I had some success with my made-to-order pajama pants, which you still see on my shop from time to time. Group orders are especially popular. But I wanted to expand to something with more creative freedom.

That's how I came to discover upcycling. My scrap pile was in need of trimming, and I began making baby dresses from the remnants of old projects. Following the expression, "waste not, want not," I pieced new things together out of bits that otherwise were headed for the trash bin. As the pile got lower, I began rummaging for scraps in different places.

I stumbled upon upcycling patterns for turning a pillow case into a baby dress; beer caps into earrings; making old or trash-bound items new and fun again. I don't believe upcycled clothing has to make you look like a striped rainbow clown from a renaissance fair. There is so much yet to be discovered in the upcycling fashion world. And that's the journey I'm on now.

So follow along as I work my way through thrift stores, free bins, and friend's-of-friends scrap piles to turn abandoned goods into your next treasure. Join me, a firm believer in reduce-reuse-recylce, and now upcycle, in lifting up the cause, and looking good while we do it!

Additional policies and FAQs
Each item is handcrafted, so it is important that the buyer care for the item accordingly. For example, quilts should be washed rarely, spot cleaned when possible, and only washed by hand, or on delicate settings in cold water, and hung to air dry.
