Welcome To Erin Killian Pottery!

My name is Erin and I’m a former journalist (most recently for National Public Radio in Washington, D.C.). In 2012, my husband and I packed up with our infant boy and headed West to the California desert so we could soak in the mountains, explore the West coast and take on creative projects. That’s when I fell in love in pottery. I took classes from a local potter in our desert town about an hour from Death Valley. One day, after throwing on the wheel for eight consecutive hours, while I was six months pregnant with my second boy, I came home and breathlessly said to my husband: “I could do this all day every day!”

Now in Palmdale, Calif., I spend every spare moment in my studio in my backyard, listening to the birds (and NPR, of course). Most of my pieces are wheel thrown. I work in small batches, mostly with stoneware, and have a simple, functional style inspired by nature — water, mountains, desert. Because each piece is handmade there is often a funky element (whether it’s an imperfection in the glaze or a slightly off-center handle) that makes it one of a kind — and, to me, beautiful.

On some of my pieces, I carve the year on the bottom of the pot. I love the idea of my pottery outliving me in the world -- in my kids' hands and their kids' hands, etc. I also love making things that are used every single day by friends and family and beautiful people who find joy in living and breathing and appreciating. So thank you. For being here, for supporting handmade, and for understanding what handmade pottery can mean in the world.

Frequently asked questions
Do you take custom or personalized orders?

I love doing custom orders, but I have very limited time, so unless it's a shape or glaze I've already made, it's unlikely I'll be able to fill it. However, please don't hesitate to ask -- if I can make it happen, I will!

Also, please note that if you ask me to make something and don't buy it within two weeks of receiving the listing, I reserve the right to sell it to another buyer. I can't hold inventory in my limited space for too long. Thank you for understanding!

You really don't take refunds or exchanges?

Each of my pieces is one of a kind, so all sales are final. But if you have a problem with your order, please contact me within 3 days.

If your order arrives in broken pieces, don't worry, we can find a solution. Here's what you do:

1. Immediately photograph the package and the broken piece(s).
2. Contact me ASAP to let me know about the situation.
3. I'll send an agreed-upon replacement or full refund ASAP.

If you are truly unhappy with your order please contact me and we will work something out. I love my customers and want you to be happy with your purchase. Handmade ceramics are delicate, so I cannot (unfortunately) be responsible for broken pieces months down the road.

Thank you!

Wholesale availability

I currently don't offer wholesale as I make very small batches, but I may consider it in the future.
