How a semi-feral rez dog led to the creation of EssieBo

How did I start my business?

Accidentally. It began with me & my husband adopting a semi-feral rez dog from the Yakama Indian Reservation. Our new pup, Saffron, was afraid of everything, including us. Walks were very stressful and anything unexpected made her panic. We started to take the same walk every day to help build up her confidence. We did this for months. Lots of months. It got really, really, really boring sometimes. I couldn’t change our walk, but I could change something I spent a lot of time looking at on our walks—her collar and leash.

I started buying matching collars and leashes, but that got very expensive and I wasn’t thrilled with the choices. I started sewing my own unique collars and leashes with colorful jacquard ribbon and nylon webbing. People started noticing them and asking where I bought my collars & leashes. So many people, in fact, that I realized I had accidentally started a business.

Why’d you name it EssieBo?

My dad always called me Essie or EssieBo. I thought it was a 3rd name that just wasn’t written down anywhere. I had a great grandmother named Elsie, another great grandmother named Effie, and a grandmother nicknamed Flossie. So, I thought Essie was another family nickname.

Then one day in 1st grade I had a world-altering epiphany. Filling out my first standardized test, I had to fill in bubbles for my first two initials and my last name and I suddenly realized I didn’t have some weird 3rd unwritten name that no one had taught me how to write. Nope, my dad had been calling me SE all that time for the initials of my name Sarah Elizabeth. It was a little like finding out you aren’t quite who you think you are.

Who am I?

Always curious—most often about the “why” of things and then the “how” of things. I value utility, so good design for useful items makes me happy. I spend a lot of time thinking about color, whether it has to do with my home, the garden, nail polish, or the things I make. When I get a color combination right, it’s so satisfying and joyful. When I get it wrong, my teeth feel like they’re going to explode. I’m drawn to detail work so Ukrainian eggs, hand embroidery, nail art are a few of the things I enjoy.

What’s important at EssieBo?

Your dog’s safety matters most to me. The most important thing my collars can do is hold up-to-date identification tags for your dog, so please make sure all your contact info is current on your dog’s tags. Having a collar on your dog indicates she belongs to someone if she ever get lost, so people are less likely to dismiss her as “just a stray”. The buckle I use is lightweight, but very strong. All stitching is reinforced. The clip I use on my leashes allows for super quick leashing up of your dog in an emergency.

Durability is very important because it ties in with your dog’s safety. The webbing and ribbon I use won't rot or degrade in wet weather or sunshine, so the collar and leash stay strong. I use top-quality hardware to ensure your dog’s tags stay on the D-ring and the collar buckle and leash clip remain intact. Not to mention, I want you to get your money’s worth!

Next, I care about your dog’s comfort and yours. My collars are as light as possible without sacrificing strength. No metal buckles means no metal touches your dog’s skin or fur so there’s no skin irritation or fur breakage. The webbing I use is soft and strong, so there’s no scratchiness. My collars and leashes are washable (directions are included) which means no more smelly collars.

Finally, I want your and your dog to look great whether your style is playful or elegant. I want you to find a collar that fits your dog’s personality or that fits your mood. I focus on collars that can evoke a season or holiday without smacking you in the head with obvious symbols or icons, so whatever your choose looks good year round. Most importantly I want your dog and you to have fun together and if one of my collars and leashes plays a part in that, I’m thrilled!

Hi! I'm Sarah, the human behind EssieBo. I started making dog collars & leashes over 13 yrs. ago when we adopted our dog, Saffron, a semi-feral dog from the Yakama Reservation. It turned out she was terrified of everything, so our daily walks had to be consistently familiar or she'd panic. This meant taking the same route day-after-day for months. Since I couldn't vary the route, the only thing I could change was Saffron's collar and the leash in my hand. I started making collars with all different designs and colors---lots of them!

I'm committed to promoting pet adoption and I'm excited to be able to donate my collars & leashes to various animal rescue groups for auctions and raffles for fund raising, I especially like giving them to groups that can send them along with a newly adopted dog.
