From surface composition to booksculpting - the cutting edge rules.

I used to be a graphic designer for many years, I've designed packaging, print media, then switched to web design.

At some point I wanted to step back from designing with the computer and develop my sculpting abilities, so I signed in for a degree course in craft design for artisans.

While my studies at the design school I researched on transforming old books into something new.
The given question was "As life changes - what can we take along, what do we have to leave behind?"
Books are personal keepsakes, such as letters and other papers.
We store the on attics and in basements, but we never retrieve them.
My initial idea was "keep a small part - drop the rest without a bad consciousness".
That was where it all started.
Experimenting al lot, I created my first book sculptures an came to develop a technique of laminating paper layers to a waterproof and hard material.

Today I create custom-made wedding bands and other personal jewels made of layered and fanned book pages, and personal papers.
The combination with precious metals, pearls and gemstones support the appearance of the paper elements.

The second part of my artistic work is book sculpting, which means cutting and carving books into facial structures. Altered books already have a story - I give them a face.

Beeing an autodidactical allrounder, I combine many techniques such as bookbinding, traditional goldsmithing, cutting and carving, coloring and painting.

I'm fascinated by so many aspects of my work:
I adore the views of fanned out cutting edges of stacked book pages, their incredible variety of pattern appearance is continually thrilling me.
Working with paper is a visual and tactile celebration for me.
From my background as a graphic designer I love typogaphy and surface composition.

Every day when I step into my studio I dive deeply into all this .
