Bath and Body Product Addiction turns into a Business

I have always loved bath and body products but didn't realize my calling until I received a book on soap making from my mother in 2007. Around the same time, I became aware of the cheap chemical laden ingredients found in many bath and body products on the market. This pushed me to start making soap and experimenting with different recipes, enabling me to feed my bath and body addiction while giving me the freedom to choose ingredients.

After my first batch of soap, I really began researching, creating and experimenting with a variety of products and ingredients. My focus and interest in the possibilities of natural, organic ingredients led me to study Herbalism in 2008. I quickly began incorporating the healing, soothing power of herbs and essential oils into my products. Later that fall, after many experiments, trials and errors, everything clicked and Etta + Billie was officially born.

I decided to name my business Etta + Billie after my grandmothers. I spent a lot of time with each of them growing up and they have always been a huge part of my life. Etta + Billie seemed like the perfect way to honor their selflessness, tenacity, support and courage.

My Grandma Etta passed away before my business really started but my Grandma Billie loves my products especially the Lavender soap.

Ingredient Info:
Shea Butter
Etta + Billie sources its unrefined shea butter from a family-owned business that is committed to creating economic stability for communities in West Africa through the harvesting and production of shea butter. The shea butter from these fair trade cooperatives has been processed using traditional steps starting from wild harvesting (picking the shea nuts from the wild trees), to milling and pressing the final oil. This process is done without the use of chemicals. The un-refined shea butter in Etta + Billie products is naturally pesticide and herbicide-free because the shea nuts come from wild trees. Not only do you support local communities through the use of fair trade shea butter you also positively impact the environment. In some communities the She trees are cut down for use as coal. Creating an economic stream surround the tree protects them from harm. Shea trees grow in West Africa in areas such as Ghana, Nigeria, Mali and Togo. Shea butter has traditionally been used as a moisturizer and healing oil because of its highly moisturizing regenerative qualities. Unrefined shea butter is packed with anti-oxidants such as tocopherals (vitamin E), flavinoids and cathechins. It is also used for cooking, candle making, and in medicinal preparations.

Additional policies and FAQs
How do you make soap?
The short answer is that soap is made by mixing a fatty acid (oils) with a base (alkali or lye). These two components chemically combine to form soap! I use the Cold-Process Soap making method which means I do not add any additional heat during the soap making process. All soap bars are cured for a minimum of 4-5 weeks to ensure a hard, long-lasting, mild bar of soap.

Does that mean that there is lye in your soap??
No. Lye is needed to make any form of handcrafted soap. By the time the chemical reaction between the oils and the lye is complete, there is no lye in the final bar of soap.

Why choose handmade soap?
Handmade soap is better than commercially produced soap. Commercial soaps are generally made with synthetic detergents, stabilizers and fragrances. These chemicals can be very harsh and irritating to the skin. In contrast, my soap is gentle and moisturizing to the skin because of the emollient oils used to create them. My soap is good for the skin because it retains all the natural glycerin that results from the soap making process. Glycerin, a humectant, attracts moisture to the skin. Commercial soaps are often drying because the natural glycerin has been removed during the manufacturing process. My soap is made with real natural ingredients like Lavender and Coconut Oil, rather than chemicals like Sodium Laureth Sulfate (chemical detergent, possible skin irritant) and Trisodium Etidronate (chemical preservative, possible skin irritant). Another benefit to handmade soap is that it is handcrafted with care by a human being, not created by a machine in a factory.
The choice seems pretty simple to me.

What the heck are Petrochemicals?
Petrochemicals are chemicals derived from petroleum or the processing of petroleum. While there is a lot of controversy about their ‘safety’ in bath and body products, my stance is that they aren't as ‘harmful’ as they are made out to be but it's likely better for our bodies and our environment if we stayed away from them as much as possible. The less we depend on petroleum, the better. Petrochemicals can be found in assorted products like plastics, shampoo, fertilizer and asphalt.
